Doesn't know where you got your education from, but this practice was already way before I was born. Brass and steel go very well together.

Actually it's copper and galvanized fittings that cause issues. While discussing it, you should use the yellow gas Teflon tape rather than the white tape. And it should be black pipe fittings rather than galvanized. I would of just used a brass barbed connector and eliminate tape and the galvanized fittings.
