5th wheel hitch maintenance

I aquired a Draw Tite 5th wheel hitch that has scratches on the skid plate that has resulted in flaking paint. I have wire wheeled the loose paint and would like to repaint it. What kind of paint should i use or should i just gease the entire surface.

You can paint with rust oleum or similar but it’ll just get rubbed off soon as you use it. The factory finish is powder coated so it’s much stronger than regular paint. I just sanded mine down and then lightly coated with grease.

When we were pulling away on our latest trip, I heard this scratching/grinding noise. I knew right away what it was...I forgot to put the Teflon plate on the hitch. Now my hitch has 2 spots on the back of the saddle plate that are scratched. I need to hit them with some rustoleum just to prevent rusting and further paint flaking. The way we learn things.
