Can Anybody Explain This?
Greetings JOF folks. Somehow upon returning from our last trip of the season, the gas milage on our TV/TT increased dramatically. For the first 2 trips of the year, reaching our destination was almost 2 tanks of gas, each way. On our last trip, it was almost 2 tanks of gas going up, and less than 1 coming back home--a reduction by 50%. I'm not complaining, believe me, but I am curious. Our cargo (weight)was pretty close over all 3 trips, our actual miles driven was all pretty close, but regardless of that, we increased our milage almost 50% on the same trip. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this is where in the TV/TT we kept our cargo. Does this matter? Happy Camping!!

Sounds like you forgot that second stop for gas :-)
Congratulations...hopefully it stays that way.
I can't think of anything that would increase fuel economy that much on the same trip, same vehicle and similar loads. Even if the TV was a diesel and just reaching break-in I would think you might see about 10% better but not 50%.

This is a clear cut case of mathematical inconsistency whereby the equations involved were subject to the effects of sunspots and the aurora borealis. Yeah, that's it

Two theories come to mind.... Do you remember seeing the same person standing on the side of the road many miles apart.... Also do you remember entering into a strange looking dark fog formation along the way... There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. You may have passed through an area that could be called "The Twilight Zone".
The second theory is everyone knows when you are driving NORTH it is all up hill burning more gasoline but on the return trip you will be driving SOUTH which is down hill all the way home...

A strong tailwind would help some, but 50%, I can`t explain that one either.

Headwinds can affect it but I don't know about 50%?

Our mileage is 10-12% better when we keep it under 60. When you find out how you got 50%, please let us in on the secret.

Did you leave the Jayco at the campground?
Saw this same thing on the tv show Gomer Plye...
Sgt Hacker wanted to buy Sgt Carter's Dodge. Hacker started siphoning gas out of the car to prompt Carter to sell it because of the poor gas mileage. Carter threw Hacker for a loop by selling the car to Gomer. To get back at Carter, Hacker started adding fuel to the car after Gomer tuned it up, to the point Gromer was getting phenominal mileage.
Maybe one of your friends topped you off to mess with you!

Thanks all, even for the jokes!! They made me chuckle. A phenomenon is a great way to describe it; maybe it can't be explained. I thought about the TV just getting "broken in" because it is relatively new. I thought about the theory that I was driving south on the way home and therefore the gas milage improved. I was constantly looking in the rearview mirror to make sure the TT was still attached. Yep and yep. That's why I thought maybe the way I had the cargo distributed.....I don't know. In summation, what has been typical of our voyages is this: We leave home with a full tank of gas, and by the time we get to our destination, I'm looking for a gas station, not emergently, but I won't pass one up, either, for the second time. Then we leave camp, and same thing; I'm going to stop and refuel because it's getting low. This time when we left camp with a full tank, I pulled into the driveway at home and I was close to being on fumes, but there wasn't a midway stop. I'm happy as can be, I just want to know what I did. The only thing I can think of in all seriousness is that I had the TV set with the cruise control on at 62mph the entire way home. Thanks for all of your replies. Happy Camping!!

Remember, the beverage cans are empty on the return trip

Did you happen to stop at a station with non ethanol gas? I can see that, with more break in, and a good tail wind, and a down hill slower tow might net you 25-30% increase in mileage

Non ethanol gas?
Did you drive back with the cruise off?
Did you drive back slower?
What was the wind doing?
With all those things combined I have increased my towing mileage from 12 to 18 (on flat land).

You neglected to mention the speed on the trip to your cg- Did you use cc on the trip down? Was there a headwind on the trip down? Did you have a tailwind on the way home? Did you use a different brand of fuel? All these things do affect fuel consumption- JMHO- DD

I have always told myself when I get an unexplained increase in efficiency in any motor that I have, it's only a matter of time until it blows up, that's why it's being so good. Has never happened, but I still tell myself that. Watch your gauges.

I bet if you actually calculated the mileage you would be about the same. You normally fill up on the way when it gets lower...on the way home you ran a full tank to nearly fumes instead of stopping when it was just under 1/2. Without actually calculating it, there is no way to know if it was any better.
