Did you happen to stop at a station with non ethanol gas? I can see that, with more break in, and a good tail wind, and a down hill slower tow might net you 25-30% increase in mileage

Non ethanol gas?

Did you drive back with the cruise off?

Did you drive back slower?

What was the wind doing?

With all those things combined I have increased my towing mileage from 12 to 18 (on flat land).

You neglected to mention the speed on the trip to your cg- Did you use cc on the trip down? Was there a headwind on the trip down? Did you have a tailwind on the way home? Did you use a different brand of fuel? All these things do affect fuel consumption- JMHO- DD

I have always told myself when I get an unexplained increase in efficiency in any motor that I have, it's only a matter of time until it blows up, that's why it's being so good. Has never happened, but I still tell myself that. Watch your gauges.

I bet if you actually calculated the mileage you would be about the same. You normally fill up on the way when it gets lower...on the way home you ran a full tank to nearly fumes instead of stopping when it was just under 1/2. Without actually calculating it, there is no way to know if it was any better.
