Diesel PU tires
After seeing the thread on 1/2 ton tires, I thought I start a new one for 3/4 and 1 ton owners. I will need new tires next year on my ram 3500. I know the Diesel engine is heavy and accounts for much of the wear of the tires. What tires have been good for these types of trucks. I have the original BFG Rugged trails still. I want an all terrain tire for light off reading during hunting and fishing season but doesn't need to be to aggressive. I am looking at Hankook ATM RF10 or good old BFG All terrains. I do like the look of Goodyear dura-tracs. Load range E tires is what I am looking for

I am getting ready to pull the trigger on the Goodyear Duratrac's after reading some excellent reviews by other Duramax owners. They are E rated and actually have a higher weight rating than the OEM tires on my truck (I am aware that that does not increase my payload capacity).

My F350 is not a diesel, but the V-10 is heavier than some. Have been using Firestone Transforce E-rated for several years with excellent results, both towing and non-towing. They do well in mild off roading, well in rain, snow, and even ice, while not being overly agressive. JMHO

I just put a new set of BF Goodrich Rugged Terrain T/As on my diesel 3/4 ton. I had a set of BF Goodrich All Terrain tires on previously and I really liked the tread pattern. The new ones are a different tread pattern, but the price was right. They're a little more aggressively styled but the look is growing on me. Plus they don't seem to hum on the freeway like some of the knobby tires do. The original tires on the truck were Pirelli Scorpions and they were nice, but they were quite a bit more than the BF Goodrich or Goodyear tires I looked at.

x2 on the firestone transforce. All around good for me with offroad and on. Made in the USA as well. I've had them for about 1 year so far.

I also have the firestone Transforce AT, mine were made in Canada. They are holding up very well, I would recommend them for highway use. The wright-ups I read online didn't rate them very well for snow and ice though.

I have Cooper Discovery A/T3's on my truck for over a year now... mildly aggressive yet quiet on the highway... and a very very stiff sidewall.... HOWEVER since I do not off road next one will have highway treads for better mileage

I put the Cooper Discovery A/T3 on my Durango. I hope they last longer than the Cooper CS4 tires one of our cars. It took 6 tires to make it to 22,000 miles. I received a very substantial adjustment from the dealer via Cooper. Another brand is now on that car!

Seann,
Are the sidewalls too stiff for you?? I am assuming these were the load range E?? Did the affect on the ride negate the benefits of the stiffer sidewalls in your opinion? I am looking for something with a stiffer sidewall but don't want to go to far.

Love the Cooper's, good off road and tow the tt well, the price is way lower than the other major brands and they were US made. Side walls are stiff but barley notice it with the truck, the stiffer the sidewall the less body roll on the tv. I had these on my 1/2 ton and the ride was alot rougher than on the 3/4 so I reduced the air pressure to 50lbs when not towing. Now with the 3/4 I leave it at 70/50 as per the door decal with no problems.

Yes load range E not too stiff of sidewall for the ride... BUT I do have to use the tire pressure gauge more as I can no longer eyeball them to tell if they are inflated properly... I have had the tires for a year now and like them except that I drive a lot and the tread eats over 1 mpg. On 35,000 miles a year that is a lot...

I am seriously considering these ones for my truck. Wear is kind of a factor with diesels.

Michelin tires came on my 07 2500 4x2 diesel. Almost 70,000 miles and still on the original set. I plan to put on the same thing when time comes for me.

Just an FYI - I found on the Dodge forums that a lot of people have had trouble running the BFG all terrain KO's on 3/4 ton Rams. It seems that they worsen issues with death wobble (somewhat common front end issue on Dodge's). I have no idea why this is, but I found enough negative accounts to keep these from being my next set of tires (which they likely would have been).
I'm currently running the Toyo Open Country M/T's in 295 70 r17 that came on the truck. I have no idea about overall mileage, unfortunately. I'd like to know to help me make a purchase decision next time. They are a more aggressive tread then I would have picked, but I really like them. They have a great load rating and good traction in all conditions so far. A bit of tire noise, but not that noticeable over the diesel noise
I'm still undecided about my next set - I'd like to get something semi-aggressive but as long wearing as possible. Everyone runs the Toyo's around here - one of the big regional tire shops carries them exclusively in this area. Pretty much nothing but good reviews out there on them. I've heard similar things about Nitto M/T's that look really similar with similar specs and are USA made.

That surprises me I have Coopers on both cars a Fusion, and a ZX2 S/R. The Fusion got a little noisy but they needed rotated. The ZX wore a set of Goodyear Eagle GT's in 20,000, after adjustment on those I put on CS4 H-rated. Both are doing well. My new used F150 came with a SUV CS4 tires I hope these are as good. I have never gotten great mileage out of Goodyear tires but the Kelly division of Goodyear has a decent tire, I have used those with good luck.

Anybody running Goodyear wrangler silent armours? They come on sale here with 4 for price of 3 soon and that make them a good deal. I hear they get slippery in the rain about half way thru their wear, which is a big consideration living on the wet coast of Canada. I am probably going to go with these or Bridgestone revo2. Two others I am considering are Hankook ATM rf10 and Toyo open country AT2. I really dislike my BFG rugged trails and they are more than half worn now. I may up size them to 285-70/17.

I've never had issues with my Ford Superduty diesels eating tires, and I am not a big advocate of rotating. The best I ever got was out of Firestone Steelteks, but they arent made anymore. Goodyears have been fair, AT's. My current F250 has Goodyear AT's, and thy look good at 50k, but wet pavement and 10k pulled behind, they loose traction quick.
Im looking at BFG T/A's, the new BFG Rugged Terrains, and the Cooper Discoverer AT3. Im thinking the Coopers are going to win. I need an all-terrain, and I dont want to give up mileage of a hard core off road tread. I' m one of the few who get good mileage out of a stock 6.4L Stroke.

As a past Dodge and current Ford owner I stay with the BFG Rugged Terrains as they offer the best ride and have an E class sidewall. I've been off road to cut firewood, put my boat in way too far a few times and have plowed many snow storms and have NEVER been stuck or dis satisfied with the performance of these tires. I used the BFG All Terrains once and they didn't last 20K miles on the Dodge and it also caused steering box issues that Dodge blamed on the tires exclusively.
