GM Hydroboost Weeping.., a little to much.
My original GM brake system hydroboost has been weeping a little power steering fluid for a few years now, but recently showing signs of getting worse......, time to change it out. From what I gather this is a common issue with GM hydroboosts, and can be a costly venture depending on what auto shop you take it to.
Has anybody done their own GM hydroboost R&R? I'm debating whether to tackle it myself (I have the tools), or find a shop that won't dig to deep into my pockets. The master brake cylinder is fine, not sure if I can R&R the hydroboost and leave the brake fluid lines connected (save bleeding the system).
Check "Google/You Tube" and appears doable, but R&R can also turn into a messy "one thing leads to another" type of project. Don't want to go the repair kit route, considering a rebuilt or new hydroboost.
Any thoughts/advise

I had to replace all the rotted brake lines on my 04 but so far my hyroboost is ok. How are your brake lines? look along the frame near the drivers door..

Hardest part is under the dash. At my age I'm letting someone younger do it. I'v been able to get mechanic off craigslist pretty cheap when I need extra hand. You'll be there supervising so no problems.

When my hydraboost unit started leaking, I found an independent rebuilder to exchange mine with, and I found a GM mechanic to change it on the side for cash.
It didn't hurt too bad.

I helped change one in a mid 90's model. PITA but it is doable. Definitely helps to have someone there.

I've had to replace my hydroboost lines a couple of times. So far no leaks from the hydroboost unit itself - where is your hydroboost unit leaking from and roughly how much is it leaking (I want to know what to look forward to)?

Brake lines look great, the truck has never experienced the Michigan salt...., keep my TV in the garage during the Michigan winters, or in the Texas Hill Country as I'm doing now.

Almost did it this year, but needed to replace my grocery-getter....., may pull off the the new F-350 next year.

The following pic's (taken in the last hour) are of my Hydroboost/Master Cylinder assembly. The hydroboost unit is mounted to the firewall, and the brake master cylinder is mounted to the hydroboost. You can see how the power steering fluid has been blown back (engine fan) covering most of the hydroboost unit, and little fluid covers the back area of the brake master cylinder:
The source of the fluid is from a 'weep hole' located at the bottom of the hydroboost mounting flange where the master cylinder mounts to the hydroboost. Apparently as the internal seals/o-rings fail the hydroboost fluid will leak out the weep hole.
My understanding is that the hydroboost uses the power steering fluid pressure to function. The hydroboost unit replaced the old big vacuum canisters that use to be mounted behind the master cylinder......, guess the newer engines don't give off enough vacuum.
When the hyperboost fails it then directly impacts the operation of the brakes and power steering.
Below is a good "how to" link and shows how challenging the project can get if one wants to rebuild their own hyperboost unit (not me).

Was given a couple auto shop recommendations in the area around the CG I'm wintering at..., made a couple of calls, stopped by three of them, and picked one. Prices ranged from $400 to $700.
The shop I went with quoted $520, the hydroboost is a remanufactured unit and comes with a lifetime guarantee ($320 material/$200 labor). A brand new unit doesn't come with a life-time guarantee.... go figure.
I'd probably tackle the project myself at my home base because I have a back-up vehicle to use and would be able to work in my garage.
I take the TV in Monday AM for the hydroboost R&R...., will report back on the outcome.

nambarc says to tie a plastic bag around it to catch the leaking oil and recycle it and save the 500 bucks. Might work.

Thread follow-up.
I had my scheduled hydroboost replaced this morning and all went well. The original estimate was $520.00, but out-the-door this morning the total came to $365.00..., same parts were installed as quoted. Parts/Labor has a 24 Months/24,000 Mile warranty, and Life Time on parts (via NAPA Autocare Nationwide Warranty Center).
TV braking initiates sooner when applying brake pedal, and has a notable firmer feel......, and doesn't leak. Very pleased with the work performed by the auto shop.
