Recommend me a TV if I wanted to eventually upgrade

I've been a sedan driver all my life but now that we're camping more and more I like the idea of getting a decent TV so we can upgrade our camper in the future. Right now we have a hybrid that weighs around 7k. I'm eyeing a 5th wheel model that's just shy of 14k gross vehicle weight. So while we won't necessarily bite the bullet and go full 5th wheel, it seems silly to limit ourselves.

Features that I'm used to with my sedan are basic things like heated seats, 4 door (need space to have 2 car seats in the back), back up camera (preferably 360 camera for parking), front & rear sensors, keyless entry/ignition, navigation, sunroof, *and* (important bc I'm a wimp when it comes to New England winters) the ability to install a car starter.

The room for car seats is most important, the gadgets to make parking is also super important since I have to parallel park at work, and the starter is a big one.

I know nothing about pickup trucks. Nothing.

But if you were me and you wanted to spend less than $40k on something (2013 or newer I'm thinking?) .... where should I start??

Backup plan would be an SUV and we just wouldn't do the 5th wheel... we'd just get a regular TT

Also to add... we don't tow with my sedan. My husband has an SUV but we might be trading it in

I'm afraid to look, because it may get me in trouble. But I think the 2017 super duties offer everything on your list. More than $40k.

Mine is a 2015 that I bought the last time I shouldn't have looked! I sat in a 2017 at the Detroit Auto show and liked the changes from my 15.

I would say you need to decide on your trailer. If you are eyeing 14000 lb trailers, then haven't you pretty much already eliminated everything but a heavy duty pickup? And is that $40k to spend before or after trade in? If you want all those gadgets for $40k, you better have a good trade in. I traded in a 2015 Suburban to get my 2016 Denali HD, and ended up financing just over $40k. I took a big hit money wise and ride comfort wise (even with the Denali package) but it was worth it to me to get the trailer we wanted.

You could find a used 1 ton diesel pickup in the $40k price range but it won't have all the gadgets you're looking for. I just got a '14 f350 dually. It's a platinum which has all the bells and whistles. However, it doesn't have front sensors or the 360 camera. It has everything else on your list. If you want/need 4wd, you'd probably need to add $6-7k to your budget. If you want everything on your list, you need a '17 super duty and a budget of at least $65k or more. Good luck with your search

If you can forgo the 5th wheel or find one in the 11K lbs range, I'd suggest looking at Nissan Titan XDs. I purchased a new loaded 2016 Platinum Reserve 4x4 diesel for right around $48K, MSRP was $63K. It has all the creature comforts you listed. The gasser might fit your needs better if you tow only a few times a year.

Every brand of truck has every option plus many you didn't list available. Just decide what color, best price, and get camping!

Still $40k+ if I bought used in the 2013 range?

The 14k lb is just an estimate. To be honest our next upgrade won't be a 5th wheel... but a girl can dream. I suppose a 5th wheel would be our 2nd upgrade

A lot of people have been saying go with Ford and stay away from Dodge. Thoughts?

My personal opinion, any recent model vehicle fitting your tow and payload needs from any of the three to four manufacturers out there will be just fine. Every forum covering every brand of truck has guys complaining of lemons as well as those that have had zero issues. In the end, it's really about doing your homework and hoping you're in the 90% of good builds that come out of a factory.

I just ordered a 2017 Ram 2500 Cummins 4x4 crew cab with everything you listed except navigation (another $600) and sun roof. It even has remote start! MSRP just over $60k but with trade, friends and family price and rebates, I will be financing just about $40k. Won't quite handle the pin weight of the 5th you want but a 3500 is about the same price. Depending on your trade, you may be able to do a new one!

A truck with good mileage will still be close to 40k in a 2013. If it has higher mileage, the price obviously goes down. My advice is get the truck for your next camper now. Otherwise you'll be getting another truck when you upgrade campers. Any of the big 3 from 2012 on should serve you well.

Some common advise around here is to pick your truck for your *next* camper. Not the one you are currently eyeballing (or own for that matter.)

If you see a 5th wheel in your future, get a truck now that can tow it. If it was me, I'd be looking at the 1 ton trucks (F350, etc).

With that price range, if you look at Fords, all I can say is stay FAR AWAY from the Navistar 6.0 Liter Diesel motor that was common in 2006 and a few years before then... The reason I say that is to hit your price target in a full ton truck, you are probably going to run into a few of those. Run fast, and far.

I've always been a Ford guy, just stay away from the 6 liter at all costs.

Realistically, your budget is low for what you are asking for. I'm shopping for 250's now and with a 20K down payment, I'm still looking at financing at least 35K. And that's for an XLT trim (not top of the line) that doesn't have all of the widgets you're looking for. You'll probably have to make a few compromises.

I would just caution you to think long and hard about whether you really think you'll add a 5ver in the future. If you are, then by all means get a 1-ton truck (a loaded 3/4 ton with the options you want won't have the payload you need for a 5ver that size, at least in a legal sense), but moving from a sedan to a full 1-ton vehicle is going to be a pretty big difference in everyday ride quality, maneuverability, etc. That in addition to the fact that if you go diesel and your daily driving habits are short trips or a lot of stop and go driving, today's emission systems, while getting better, prefer to be exercised with heavy loads and longer, higher speed drives or you're at risk of issues.

A friend of mine (Maryland) was just looking at trucks. Found a not fully loaded 15 F250 Lariat with 10k miles for $48K. The prices are up there.

As for what you need, I not only think you should get the truck for the next trailer, but if you have the means, I suggest going for the next trailer now. I've had several friends wish they'd just gotten the next one first, and never truly enjoyed the one they had.

Ram 3500 with the 6.7 Cummins. Should be able to find a decent used nicely equipped for under $40k.

Don't fall for the fan club picks of which truck is best. Since 2013 I've owned all 3 in 1 ton crew cab form with the diesel and they all have their goods and bads. If you get a used 1 ton RAM with the Aisin tranny you get 12,300 lbs GVWR. Mine has a payload per the door on the sticker of 3,999lbs. Good luck with your decision.

I drive a 1500 Ram. That being said, I rarely see a truck on the side of the road anymore.
When I do, it's always a tire problem.
Hard to go wrong these days.

The above posts sums it up, I won't repeat. One thing that is very important for me is electric adjustable seats. On a long trip for this old body, adjusting the seats on the fly moves the pressure points on the back and bottom around, keeping parts from going asleep. Since you want heated seats, (I've had them, but didn't use them) the electric seats will probably be in that trim package.

You will soon get accustom to the different size of vehicle for parking, driving etc, do not fear.
