SRW vs DRW
For those considering a new (used) tow vehicle, please seriously consider a dually.
November 2016 we went off the side of the road (not totally) while towing the 5vr and was able to continue that way until the road straightened out. Was watching the passenger side of the truck dip and the trailer tilt to the point of almost tipping. If the truck had been a SRW truly feel the truck/trailer would have been on its side.
Why did we go off the side of the road? Because of a darn deer! It was headed our way & took a look just as we entered a curve. And the roads are narrow with little to no side.
Total of about $5,000 damage between the truck & trailer.

Trailer wasn't a dually and with a higher CG it didn't lay over. I wouldn't pick a DRW just in case I drive into a ditch. Good that you made it thru the endeavor though.
I only swerve for animals that would come through the windshield. That would be moose, elephant, giraffe, etc. Everything else gets run down while braking safely.

Single vs Dual is a long discussion. I have had both and prefer the single for my needs and comfort.
Avoiding a deer would be way down at the bottom of the list.

If the deer had been hit with the front of the truck (which it would have if it had kept coming) it would have gone through the windshield.
The state road is posted 55 mph and we were barely doing 35 mph as we were going through curves. Semis drive this route & you can see them as well as locals driving down the middle of the road.
No trailer isn't a dually but it was the dually on the truck that kept us from going over.

If you're happy with the DRW choice then that's all that matters. If the trailer goes over the truck is going with it. Must have been a pretty large deer if it would have gone over the hood of a SD. Usually just destroy the bumper and grill.

November - hunting season...yep, it was good size. DW said she counted 8 point. And true, if the trailer goes the truck goes which is why we believe the dually kept is upright where a single would have tipped. Just our thoughts.

For a deer, I would take my chances with locking the brakes up and hitting the deer with my truck before I would go over the bank with the truck and trailer. Now if it had been a moose that is a whole different story, nothing good comes out of hitting one of them.

OP could get a ranch hand bumper or grill guard so that avoiding hitting a deer isn’t as “necessary “. The deer population is out of control where we live. DW and I have both had collisions with deer in the past. Now I have a grill guard on my truck so I don’t worry about it as much. Just my .02

We have a DRW and its only a 1500 dollar option. My buddy has a 2001 ford SRW and went out and bought a dual axle from a salvage yard and found the flares as ford can just bolt them on and changed it to a dually. Pretty cool. he said cheaper than buying a new truck and as it is the 7.3 i dont blame him.

We've hit five deer at the same time with an ambulance. A mess. but none came through the windshield. I've had two deer run into me and both died on the spot but none came through the windshield
OTOH a person was killed by an airborne deer that came through the roof and windshield
Why was it flying? Cause it had gotten hit by oncoming traffic
Motto: some things you can't predict.

I have the SRW due to the fact that I want it to fit in our garage and I use the truck as my commute vehicle a lot more that my TV. Being in Minnesota we have LOTS of vehicle/deer accidents and there are more people killed by driving off the road to avoid the deer than there are injuries to passengers due to deer coming into the vehicle
