TV won't start

Morning all

2008 2500HD Duramax 260000 miles. Has been running great on this trip (IL to AZ). Ran a little hot on Wednesday coming up the hill on the way to Prescott Valley. Pulled over let it cool and off we went. Ran great after that.

Yesterday we went from Prescott to Tucson. Heat gauge was slightly past center but went down the road fine.

Got to the camp ground, got unhooked and set up. Cooled the Humingbird down and jumped back into the truck to go visit our daughter....the trouble began.

Started fine, ran for a couple minutes then died. Turns over but won't fire.

Any thoughts on where to start? Was supposed to start return trip today but kind of stuckat the moment.

Thanks

could be lots of things... do you have a code reader? if not your best bet is to tow it to a place that can read codes... could be lots of things.. guessing is never cheaper...

You are going to have to read the codes somehow. Google for diesel shops in your area. They may be able to get someone out to your location to read them for you.

Also, start with the basics. Pull the fuel filter and make sure it isn't clogged. Check to make sure you are getting fuel to the injection pump. Check under the hood for any loose connections on the wiring harness etc.

Sorry to hear about the trouble.

A very common issue with the Duramax (especially under hot conditions) is the 'low fuel rail pressure' code - P0087. Try priming your fuel filter. If you're not familiar with this it's the large silver button on top of the fuel filter housing. Pump this straight down as many times as needed to get it to a firm condition. Actually the proper way is to loosen the bleeder screw next to it first, pump until a bit of fuel comes out, tighten the screw back up.

Let us know if this works!

Seems to have done the trick! Didn't loosen the screw just primed it. Turned over about 5 seconds then started right up. Let it run 10 min, shut off, and it started right up again.

Much appreciated. This is my first foray into the diesel world so learning as I go.

You still may want to get the codes read and reset.

Fantastic!

Do you have a check engine light? - I assume so. So for reading and clearing codes I use the Torque Pro app on my phone. I have a bluetooth adapter plugged into my OBDII port that talks to the app and works well. This particular app only works with an Android phone. For the iPhone you can use Dash Command or some others.

I got the adapter from amazon for about $25 and you do want the 'pro' version of the app - I think it was $5. Oh and I also bought a 90 degree OBDII cable that lets me plug into the port (near the emergency brake release), wire tied it and the adapter up under the dash. This way the adapter isn't just hanging out ready to be kicked and knocked out of place. This makes for a nice setup as it's always plugged in and all I have to do is jump in my truck and launch the app.

Besides reading and clearing codes I use Torque Pro to also monitor temps for coolant and transmission (as well as other items). I've heard and verified that the dashboard engine temp gauge is not very accurate on my (2006 vintage) truck. It reads low and that's not good. What I read on my app seems to be very accurate. You do not want to overheat this engine! The trans temp gauge on the dash seems to be pretty accurate.

Here's a good video that shows the app and the same Bluetooth adapter that I use.

So realize that something could still be wrong with the truck. I suspect that this is going to happen to you again during these same conditions. Hopefully it's just as simple as a fuel filter replacement but it could be several things. Find a good, highly recommended and independent, Duramax mechanic in your area.

Enjoy your trip!

The check engine light is on for about 30-45 seconds then goes off.

After priming and starting it does not show at all.

I'll take a look at the reader you suggested.

Thanks.

If and when you get it to the repair shop. Do not let them "Flash the ECU". Your need to know the codes. Demand the codes from the repair mechanic, write them down. Once flashed you will not know the reason for the problem or any conditions that may be pending.

If the mechanic tell you the ECU needs to be flashed, get second opinion. Mechanics may flash and tell you your filter needed replaced. Maybe yes maybe no. The codes may tell you another story.

Once flashed all history is erased like for ever.
