Was a great weekend
Had a wonderful 4 day weekend at the lake. We loaded up and hooked up the camper and started home. Then it happened brakes went to the floor. Was going slow enough to use the trailer brakes to get slowed down and get off the road. Checked the brake fluid, it was empty. My 16 year old said dad look under the truck. Sure enough one of the metal lines that comes from the master cylinder down to the abs module on the frame had rusted and wore a pretty good hole in it. So there we set. Couple phone calls and a few hours of waiting, a good friend showed up 10 minutes before the roll back showed up. Already had the camper unhooked and waiting for him to show up. Hooked up to his truck and gave the tow company home address and off we went.
Just ordered new metal brake lines for the entire truck off Rock Auto $87 shipped.

Very true, hate to think what it would have been without it.

I've had similar happen. Though not when trailering. When a line blows, you still have 1/2 of the braking system. So a safe stop is possible.
It is a very unpleasant surprise. And yelling "Tell me something I don't know" at the BRAKES light doesn't help much.
Glad all is OK.

Chevy seems to have a big problem with rusty brake lines on the Silverados. I found companies that are making stainless brake lines now but they are out of my price range. Is your ABS pump under the cab? I believe you have to use a special computer (Scanguage 2) to bleed the ABS pump.

Pre-bent Stainless lines are now available for popular models at your local napa store. Might be a couple more bucks, but you wont have to worry about rusting out again. I Fluid Film (a great product for lube and rust preventer) all my brake, transmission cooler, and fuel lines every oil change to keep them from rusting. So far, so good.
As far as bleeding, I don't remember having to use a special tool to bleed the brakes on GM trucks, but its been a long time. Id try myself, and if you have an abs light or soft pedal after your done, you may have to have them bleed. If you have every thing open/loose, it shouldn't cost too much...

I had the same issue on my 06,i put on all new stainless lines and hoses at the wheel. You will need a Tech 2 tool to bleed ABS module,or do it the poor mans way and drive down a dirt road and lock the brakes up a few times a re bleed

OP, glad to hear you made it safely to the side of the road, that could have been messy.

It's not just Silverado’s and it's not just brake lines. This is us after a transmission cooler line rusted through and burst during a trip earlier this year. If you own one of these trucks you NEED to check this (or have it checked). The Chevy forums are full of threads with people dumfounded that with all the recalls Chevy has done lately that this was never addressed. Very glad we've since bought a Ram 1500.

We take a lot of pictures while camping and my wife wants to put together an album for every year. She says this one will for sure be included. You've got to take the good with the bad in life I guess.

Last year I replaced all the lines on my truck. This year I had one on the rear axle split with predictable results. At NAPA I built a plug that screws into the rear distribution block. Unscrew the offending line, screw in the plug, bleed the other wheel and off we go on three truck brakes. Works until I can get it fixed. You can also build a plug to block off half of your master cylinder so you can get it home or to a safe spot to deal with it.
All vehicles rust those out brake lines along the frame. If you have a vehicle ten years old (arbitrary number that has worked for my trucks) you are probably on borrowed time.

In an emergency you can always use the parking brake but people usually begin to panic
and also can turn the ignition key off and slam it into Park in a extreme emergency!!!

It is unfortunate that most people do not know what or where the park brake is.. and have never used it.. this according to my service shop as they find most of them ceased from lack of use.

This happened to my old 2002 Suburban, the DW pulled out of the driveway and stepped on the brakes. The brakes went down to the floor but she managed to apply the E-brakes. Most of the fluid came out, the brake line was rusted from underneath near the frame rail by the master cylinder. This has happened to a couple of friends (not just a GM problem). It seems more prevalent in the Northeast region. Feds end GM brake-line rust probe, advise owners to wash underneath their cars and trucks

I had the wheel cylinder fail on my 99 suburban a few months ago. Luckily I was towing my trailer to a maintenance shop. Its brakes eventually stopped me. But only after I tapped the guy in front of me. Had to buy him a new bumper. And I replaced the entire brake system with everything new, except the lines. I closely inspected them and they were all in good shape and I let them ride. After reading this thread I'm thinking I should revisit this issue.
