WDH help

Hi everyone,

New to the forum, Jayco, and wdh towing. My wife and I just ordered Jayflight 33rbts. Quite an upgrade from our pop up ! Trailer won't be delivered until first week of June.

I need to pick a wdh though. Would like some real users input. Have narrowed it down to Blue Ox Swaypro, Equal-i-zer, and Andersen no sway. Dealer carries blue ox, Equal-i-zer/fastway, and Curt trutrack. Andersen I would have to get somewhere else. I would prefer integrated sway control. Would appreciate some help though as I have no experience with any of these products. Can I go wrong in picking one over the other?

TV Nissan Titan XD with diesel
TT Jayflight 33rbts- brochure says: uvw 8690, dhw 915, gvwr 10950, and cargo 2260. I know actual yellow sticker will probably vary.

Thanks in advance.

There are video's from the manufactures which explain their products. I use the Pro Series (12000 lbs. 1200 lbs. bars) with two sway bars as I want to be in control of sway in heavy wind conditions. It is also the cheapest on the market and doesn't take much longer to hookup and un-couple. But everyone has his/her own opinion they want. (used the same system for over 50 years except renewed a few times with trade in)

Hi to you and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on the soon-to-be-yours JayFlight.

I own and am very pleased with my Equal-i-zer brand 4-point WDH. I'd recommend it to you or anyone else that asks. Polls of users on this site have consistently recommended it. NOTE that it is the 4-point hitch I recommend; IMO, the Fastway design does not offer as much anti-sway as the 4-point.

Be aware that you'll need to keep an eye on your tow vehicle's PAYLOAD (trailer tongue weight ~1,500lbs plus everything in/on your truck cab and truck bed). Most folks hit the tow vehicle's PAYLOAD limit before the 'towing capacity'.

I don't think Anderson is recommended for trailers that long?

I have an Equal-I-zer 4 point sway control hitch. I strongly agree with OldmanAZ above with what he said about the fastway.

As you mentioned the 33RBTS has a GVWR of 10,950lbs..., and depending on your personal 'typical' loading habits could result in a fairly heavy loaded tongue weight. As you know WDH brands with integrated sway control and high-end weight ratings are limited.

Of the WDH brands you mentioned I tend to lean toward the Equal-i-zer WDH. The 1,400lb rated model IMO would be the minimum weight rated WDH for a moderately loaded 33RBTS (9,750lbs).

IMO if you have heavy loading habits/requirements and/or tow typically with full fresh water tanks, I would want a WDH rated at 1,600lbs minimum. The Reese Strait Line WDH comes in a 1,700lb rated model with integrated sway control.

I like the Blue Ox underslung for us. I had to get a different shank for the 2.5" receiver but it was easy to setup and performs well.

By far best sway eliminating hitch is ProPride. Expensive but worth the price if you plan on towing a lot. I know of a nice used one in northern Ohio if you are interested.

You're going to want a hitch with GOOD sway control with that much trailer behind you. I think you're going to be right at cargo capacity for the TV once you're loaded to travel.

Watch a few videos on You Tube to help make your decision. After 36 years of trailer towing, I admit I like Reese products and currently have their Steadi-flex:

If you like this hitch (or any other for that matter) check and compare prices at streetsideauto.com

I did a lot of searching for best prices and learned a dealership usually has high prices, unless they include set up.

I have no connection with Reese or Streetside.

Also, I agree with the post above, you may want to avoid the Andersen hitch due to it's lack of moving weight from the rear axle to the front wheels.

Welcome aboard! There are a lot of good hitches out there, and a lot of low cost introduction hitches, that do not include sway control. You can add aftermarket sway bars, that look like shock absorbers. The downside to them, you MUST remove them to back up, even a foot.

My primary recommendation is to ensure it includes an integrated sway control. I have the Equalizer 4 point WDH. Works greats, and is easy to use.

I have the Blue-Ox and love it. No sway, quiet, easy to set up and I don't have to remove bars to back up. Also, if you need a 2 1/2" shank, just call Blue-Ox and they will send you a 2 1/2" shank and a return label to send the 2" back to them. I probably would have gone for the Equalizer but I cringe whenever I hear one in the campground squealing. Nothing against them, just my personal opinion.

X2. Have used Blue Ox Sway Pro WDH with my both of my campers and very happy with them. They work great.

Thanks everyone for the information. I have had the same thoughts about the Andersen for a trailer that long. Leaning toward the blue ox. Probably will come down to which one I can get a better price on. Someone might disagree but I don't think I can go wrong between Equal-i-zer and Blue Ox Swaypro.

MY dealer sent me the vin yesterday and it is a scheduled built with a completion date of June 4th. Getting closer and excited.

I have an Equalizer 12k towing an Eagle 314 BHDS, which provides plenty of margin. My previous truck was a ‘16 F350 crew with gas. I’d be lying if I said that trailer didn’t impart a significant load on the truck, as I felt a bit of sway a few times, but it was easy to right. You’re looking at a bigger trailer than mine with a truck with less capacity, so you need to do it right. Good luck.

I'm going to be that guy and put in a good word for the Curt TruTrack. It is very similar in design to the Equalizer. When we bought our trailer in late 2017, I was able to get the TruTrack for about $200 less than the Equalizer from eTrailer.com.

If you are still looking you might give Andersen customer service a call. I and every post on Andersen agree that they have great customer service. I really doubt they would approve their hitch for your trailer if it will not work properly.

I too think it is funny that some creak like an old tree in the wind. Mine made noise the first couple times I went out. Put lube on the lube points and it has never made a noise since.

Talked to Andersen manufacturing this morning. They said it would work but said being as long as it's going to be I would probably have more sway with their hitch verses "some of the others".

Andersen customer service was great. I will say that for sure. I told them I appreciated the honesty.

Important question: What's the receiver rating on a Nissan Titan XD Cummins? If the OP's truck has an OEM 2.5" CAT V hitch, then all these higher-rated WDH's (1,400-1,700 lbs.) will probably work fine. If the truck has a 2.0" CAT IV receiver hitch, well . . . the OP choices in WDH's will probably be limited to < 1,200 lbs. Odds are the tongue weight on this TT (in the realworld, loaded--not in a brochure) will be anywhere from 1,200 - 1,500 lbs. The Titan Cummins typically has around 1,400 - 1,700 lbs of payload--depending on the trim level. The OP may have some potentially difficult choices to make if he/she wants to stay within this truck's ratings.
