How Much Wind Can Tent Ends Survive?

Hey Everyone,

Just came back from Jalama Beach in California. Is was super windy maybe 20-30 mph? The tent ends seem to withstand the wind but I decided to close them up and "Turtle" it. Being that my Hybrid is new and my first experience with tend ends I played it safe. Are the tent ends built/stitched to withstand such winds?

Thanks All!!

Yes! I have been in 50 mph + winds without any problems.

They can withstand pretty high winds. I have been in wind gusts maybe a little higher tan what you experienced with no issues. Sound worse than it is while inside.

Now the awning .... that's a whole 'nother issue ....

Agreed with the previous two posts. If the winds are high enough to be a problem for the bunk ends, then you probably should be seeking shelter!

We just came back from Bantam Jeep Fest and one heck of a storm came through at 4:00 AM one morningI i thoought we ended up in OZ! The x17z held up with no issues at all. The only thing we made sure is that our awning was in.

Same here with my POPUP tent ends... The 40-45mph gusts start getting me nervous... The bad part with the POPUP is the side to side movement form the extended top. Mine will move a good six inches if I push from the inside just above the door. I don't have any movement front to back... Gets your attention real quick when the picks up...

To solve the side to side movement I added eyebolts to each of the four corners of the roof and run 15-foot length web straps to ground. I run those 18-inch long 3-inch auger style earth anchors into the ground. This is great tie down spot for the awning as well. When you remove the earth augers they don't leave any footprint in the soil.

You should not have this problem with the TT/Hybrid trailers with tent ends

Last week while at “Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park” in Montana, I would guess we were in 50+ mph winds, and would not be surprised if the wind speeds where closer to 70+ mph. It was in the middle of the day, no rain, with clear skies, the HTT was sitting on the valley floor, with very few trees around us. The stabilizers were down and tight, wheels chocked and the HTT was a rock’n and a roll’n with us in it. I would guess the top of the trailer was pitching four to six inches as it rocked, I was actually beginning to be concerned the HTT would rotate or worse yet flip. I was watching the tent ends as I had nothing else I could do. The side panel on the up wind side was pushed inwards onto the support cable, and the end frame, which really kept the tent from flapping in the wind, and gave it good support. The downwind side of the tent was blown up like a balloon. We had no damage.
