2 Questions for Mercedes Sprinter Diesel Owners

We recently bought a 2022 Melbourne L based on the above mentioned chassis.
Reading through the owners manual it specifically states NOT to use Diesel fuel that is more than 5% Bio-Diesel. As a former OTR driver I know that many states have (or are going to) B20 fuel. So…

Question #1 — Where are you purchasing your fuel in states with severe restrictions (like California) where B20 is just about all you can get?

Question #2 — If you are using B20 have you developed any issues with it regarding the regeneration frequency or operation?

Question #3 — Have any of you installed a “catch tank” in your intercooler system to help keep the excess oil out of your exhaust regeneration system, and if you did…where did you get the tank from and are there any warranty issues?

I’m quite sure I’ll have more questions because I have heard SO many horror stories about issues surrounding the Mercedes Regeneration System. I just want be sure I avoid as many issues as possible. It seems these Mercedes Diesels are rather finicky and prevention will be FAR cheaper than a cure.
My wife says I already waste too much money on excessive maintenance as it is (because I change the oil and lube every 2500 miles in my Cummins equipped pickup).

Thanks all…

I first heard of the issue when doing some google searches about sprinter problems well before we purchased. One of my searches lead me here ( Mercedes-Benz Sprinter OM642 & OM651 BlueTEC Diesel Issues & Problems | Stephens Service Center - Sacramento's Best Mercedes-Benz Service & Repairs ).

Then I called the guy and we talked at great length (which convinced me that my best option was NOT to buy a pre owned unit simply because unless the previous owners kept meticulous records would be a crap-shoot).
This gentleman has forgot more about the Mercedes Blu-Tec engine than I could learn in my lifetime as just an owner.
Call him…he will take the time to address your concerns. I’m spending the money to get his information package (I’m sure he’ll mention it on the phone).

In my opinion it’s a so called crap shoot with any new or used vehicle. Get on the forums with Dodge, GM, Ford and you here all kinds of stories and experiences. One thing for certain is RV’s require preventive maintenance of both the house portion and chassis. It’s not cheap if you pay others do the routine maintenance. Going into RVing with open eyes will help! Yes maintenance records help. Mechanical things break! I personally like a Sprinter chassis. But I also like Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge and Freighter and have had them all in an RV or personal vehicle. I’m also a preventive maintenance nut! I also buy new and used and while these forums have excellent information and helpful advice, The information is from a personal point of view or experience like the one I’m sharing with you.
