Class A and C mileage

First off, no one buys a motorhome for fuel economy.
That said, as a whole, what gets better economy?
32 foot class A or 32 foot class C?

just curious.

Depends on your foot! I had a 32 foot Class A towing a Honda Civic on a tow dolly. Averaged 10 mpg. I’ve had three travel trailers, towed by three different pickups, and all averaged 9.5 to 11 mpg. No experience with a Class C, but my neighbor has a 31 foot Jayco Class C and he says he averages 10mpg. My best mileage is going about 62 mph. 65 and above the average drops like a rock, headwinds make it even worse. Your mileage may vary……..

Fuel/Gas mileage depends upon the road, wind and how fast you think you need to go. I stopped worrying about that years ago. Too depressing when diesel was $4.50 a gal.

For the same weight and engine\drivetrain, they both get the same.

My 2005 27 foot class C Jayco with the Ford V10 gets 11 MPG at 65 MPH. In the city, about 6 to 8 MPG.

2018 v10, ~10, road, wind, towing make a difference. I'd est 8-9mpg towing in general.

I only get in the 7-8 mpg range. I would be thrilled with 10 mpg. Towing does not seem to make much difference.

Thanks everybody?

Just needed to know if there was much difference. Hopefully picking up a class C this weekend, but have a backup plan for a class A also.

thanks again,

I've put about 2,000 miles on our new Redhawk with the Ford 7.3 in it. I tow a 6,000lb trailer with sand toys in it and average about 60-65 mph. I'm hovering around the 6-8 mpg range if you trust the computer. I stopped calculating mileage a long time ago.

I would assume you'll get about the same in a Class A and C. Or at least not enough to make a difference in purchasing decisions.

Didn't mention if your A was a diesel.. I believe those generally get a few more MPG, but the gas is more expensive as well. In the long run I believe they are cheaper overall by MPG, not by much, and then the maintenance costs of diesel make it about the same as gas.

I could be wrong since i don't have experience with diesel, but that has been what I gather from readings

I have a 2014 32' Precept and my friend has a 2019 28'Grayhawk and they both have the V10 engine. His Clas C gets about 1 MPG more than my Class A. Towing, I get around 7 and he gets around 8. We are in the mountains with a lot of substantial upgrades on the interstates.

Frontal area is what counts. Both are equal in resistance. I run a 2019 Melbourne 24l with a Mercedes diesel. Avg 73mph (Florida highway requirements so you don’t get run over on I95) 11.5 mpg pulling 1500# in a trailer.
I’d not worry about mileage. But Diesel is better.

When I owned class two different class c's, I got about 9 to 10 mpg. I also have had two different class A's; 33 and 36 foot and I got about 6.5 to 7 mpg. I always towed cars of about 4,500 lbs.

RVs are not efficient but it's a trade off with staying in motels and eating in restaurant all the time. Diesels are more efficient, but you have to pay a lot more for them and they are exotic hardware that is more costly if you need repair. The good old Ford gassers have never failed me in 22 years of RV'ing.

Hi Shadow chaser! We just purchased a 2017 Melbourne 24L in Nov. We have only driven it about 250miles and put it away in Storage. What do you like and not like so much about it! This is our 1st motorhome! Anything that needs to be changed? Thanks in advance!

I don’t want to hijack this thread. If you start a new topic, I’ll jump in. Lots of things to like. Some changes made. Very few things to dislike.
