Cummins Generator

This may have been addressed before; sorry if I duplicated it.

Do yourself a favor and either drain your carb bowl, or install a fuel shutoff valve by the fuel filter and shut that off and run the generator until it stalls out whenever the RV is going to be in storage for awhile. Or, start the gen once a month and run it for 30 minutes.

I failed to have/do all of the above, and went out yesterday to fire up the generator for an upcoming stay at Daytona (24 hour race). I did not have a full hookup there, so the generator was going to be needed. Well, I got about 5 seconds of smoke from the exhaust, and then it quit, and will not restart. Off will come the carb in hopes it can be cleaned out, but I ordered a new one just in case. A fuel line cut off valve will be installed too, plus I will remember to open the screw below the carb's bowl to drain it if it sits.

Lesson learned.

Good advice, I would like to add that Onan Cummins recommends that the generator be run and exercised for 2 hours every month

Hopefully you wont need to replace the carb. 1st try removing the spark plug and either cleaning it or better replace it.

I had trouble starting my gen after sitting for more than a few weeks. The only way I could get it to start was to clean or replace the plug, it was saturated with fuel each time.

After adding a fuel shutoff and running the carb dry each run, Gen now starts right up.

I was able to get mine running (started darn near as soon as I pressed the toggle switch) after removing the solinoid at the bottom of the carb and cleaning it. The plunger was stuck, due to the quality of gas we have available to us (the ethenal likes to gum up if it sits too long).

Two hours...I always heard on the forums to run it 30 minutes and then cut off the fuel supply, then let it stall out if it will not be run for awhile. I guess if you run it 30 minutes a week, that would be just as good.
