Entry door gas shock on my melborne, 26A
is weak, in that its slow to open ( yawn)
is it generic, or Jayco only,
anyone replace theirs?
where 'd you get it?
ALSO... what pressure weight is original?
as I see some with 40lb/ 60lb/ 120lb

I had to replace the strut on my Greyhawk's door after it was ripped out by a gust of wind. The 10lb one I got from Amazon works perfectly. One thing I had to do was transfer the end pieces from the old strut because the new ends were a tad too big and would rub on the door. Not a big deal to swap.
The new strut has been in place for over 2 years. I had also installed a lanyard on the top of the door to prevent it from opening too far and destroying my new strut.

They are very generic. My dealer recommended a 20 inch 20 pound strut. 20 pound is ok, I would prefer a little lighter, maybe 15 pound

I had one end of the air spring on our door break. Look at the small print on the cylinder and look up that name on the internet. You should be able to locate the manufacturer and their website to get an exact duplicate.

being it was dark out, cold (28) and I'm lazy ,
so I asked here,
I looked and measured, this am, 20in, but no pressure numbers on the old one.
also looks like fun to remove on the coach end (vs the door end)
as the canopy is directly above it,
my thoughts are the less pressure.... the less strain on the brackets.
THX for the input and help.

Mine did not have any numbers on it either.
Super easy to remove, there is a clip that holds the socket onto the ball. Do the end you can see first, the other end will be similar.

I camped in the late fall and it seemed like the lower temperatures made the shock work slower. I went back to normal when temperatures came back up.

ordered and received one from amazon,
drug out the ladder, and it took most of 5 min to install, LOL
I had to tighten the bracket screws on both ends , as they had become slightly loose.
I ordered the 15lb gas shock, works flawless, not to strong, may have gotten by with a 10lb, but its on and working,
but.. I'll watch the mounting brackets, as they flex with use,( it did with old one too)

Entry door wind gust protection strap, lanyard
We went with a strap. Dog leash, melt the ends to stop fraying and install so it gets taut before the gas strut hits the end of its stroke. This doesn't interfere with the screen door. (sorry, off topic, apologies to OP)

how are you attaching the limit straps/ cables? and where?
I see my brackets flex, when the door is open,
and I like the limit idea.
oh, the new gas shock is outstanding, door opens smoothly, and quickly,

Entry door wind gust protection strap, lanyard
Yes, glad to help. Saved our bacon recently when a gust caught the door. There are probably other methods, but this is the way we did it. Top of the door we used 2 self tapping screws with a metal piece we had lying around to spread the load, later changed to 2 flat washes. On the door frame, a 1/4" countersunk screw and nut, since we could get to the nut with the door frame trim removed. You'll notice that we folded the end over at the door frame end. Can't do that at the door end, due to clearance. Easy mod and saves the gas strut!

excellent! THANKS!
pics answer about 100 questions I had, LOL
in over thinking this (typical for me)
attaching closer to the hinge, to shorten the length of the strap?
or don't worry, as its no big deal.

Mine works well in warm weather but is VERY slow when it gets near or below freezing. I think it is the nature of the beast. I would probably wait until warmer weather to decide on a change...plus cold fingers don't work well !

Glad the pictures helped.
Good question on the location. The distance of the strap from the moving edge of the door determines how strong the strap and attachments need to be. Think about leverage. Look at some storm door wind chains and you will see they are installed at about the same distance as this strap.
