Change Awning from 14 ft. to 20 ft.

My co-pilot has decided that more awning would be a good thing. Our 2011 Eagle ht 27.5 bhs has suffered some wind damage to awning and repairs are in order. The original awning (from Jayco- electric) is only 14 ft. and the additional length would be towards the front some 6ft. (4 ft. would have been OK but a storage door got in the way). The question is : has this been done by anyone? or is this project a non-starter! Is some one aware of a tech person at Jayco that could answer such a question? all commets welcomed thanks.

There wouldn't be any framing in the wall for the arms in the new position. I wouldn't know how you'd property and safely attached it. Awning arms see a lot of stress from the weight, wind and rain.

That's something that you need to get Jayco to answer.........
I'm sure there is a way to do it, but you should find out from them.

I'd suggest e-mailing Jayco Customer Support with the VIN number of your trailer and asking for blueprints of the wall construction so you can see what options you may have.

X2, I would not tell Jayco what your thinking of quite yet. But they will provide wall construction drawings.

I have not heard of anyone who has installed a longer awning..

I'd be worried about the wall not taking the weight of the longer awning. I know it's not as pretty, but I got a 10'x10' canopy from Costco similar to this for more shade. Of course I wanted it for over the table a bit further away from the RV, but it could be a low cost option for more "awning" without any concern of the structure of the wall of the RV.

Yes, I do know how half-a..ed that solution is. But RV walls seem so flimsy to me, and the forces of wind on an awning make me feel like I should mention it anyway.

JAYCO response

Well the word from Jayco is that it does not think it would be a wise move.
The wall structure is the same, but the extra "sail effect" of a larger awning
may exceed their stress level on that wall. So I guess a stand alone Kitchen tent is in the plans. Thanks for your feedback.
