Fifth wheel hitch
New to the fifth wheel world. In the process of shopping the fifth wheel hitch for my truck. I have a Jayco 321 RSTS with a GVW of 12,500. I was looking for a 16K but somebody told me to get a 20K, why should I?

I would think 16k would be fine unless you envision an upgrade to a larger 5th.
Also consider whether a slider is needed (long vs short bed).

Medicbob, What are you going to use as your TV? Save yourself some $$$ and buy what you need for now, the 16K. If you have a short box I would look at the Pullrite #4100 Superglide auto slide. Others here will suggest the Anderson which is similar to a goose neck hitch. I'm more comfortable with using the standard fifth wheel hitch myself. If goose-neck was the best answer for a 5er then I would think you would be seeing manufactures making them standard and they are not. Another point is where the hitch weight is applied to the TV. You want a hitch that will put the pin just in front of the centerline of the rear axle.

IMO, there's no reason to spend more if not needed. Generally the features are the same so you really wouldn't be gaining value. I've been using the same 16k for 9 years, 2 trucks and 3 trailers now with no doubt it will continue to do the job.

If no plans to go bigger, 16k is fine. Been very satisfied with my BW Companion slider.

I bought more than I needed because I found a great deal on craigslist. I figure that I "may" get a bigger fifthwheel but also may need tobhelp someone else by hauling theirs. Was easy to justify the almost new but half price deal.

But the hitch that matches your truck rating, unless you see a truck upgrade looming.

I put on the B&W turnover Gooseneck and use the B@W Companion hitch which mounts into the gooseneck hole. You can remove the 5er hitch and still use your bed. No rails left behind. It's rated at 20,000

I always got a shade bigger than I needed. Have an 18k Reese Elite now from last fifth wheel. Fits in factory pucks, so still no rails in the way when it's out. Sometimes I wish I'd have got the higher rated one, just in case, but so far every fifth wheel we're considering for full timing falls well below that in GVWR. Last rig was 15.5k.

Mostly for overkill IMO. I have a similar rig and the 16K hitch in my sig. has served use well for 9 years.
No need to go larger IMO.

I love my Companion and use the GN to pull a cargo trailer, too. Great company to deal with on the few occasions I've needed to. With my '02 D'max, CC, SB, 4x4, I can NOT hit my cab at full lock either way, when going forward.
