marine type twist lock power cord

We have a 50 amp twist lock marine type power cord connection. It has a collar to screw down to hold it tight. However, try as I might, it does not screw down enough to hold the connection tight. I have heard these loose connections cause significant problems enough that it will melt the wires on both ends. My buddy has an eagle 5th wheel and we could smell something electrical inside the rig. He took it too the shop and it was melting the wires all the way to the inverter. He avoided a big disaster. Anyone else had experience with this? I am getting concerned about my rig now as it is a 2014 as was his.

Mine was never what I would call "easy", but I was always able to get it screwed in.

Perhaps you could install one of these?

I looked at putting one on my TT. It was on my list of mods if we kept the trailer. We didn't end up keeping it, so I never got that far down my "mod" list.

That seems like a great option. Going in for some maintenance work soon and that will be something I will look at.

After owning several boats over the years I will never again use twist lock plugs. I have seen several boats burn and it was determined the twist lock plug caused the fire. They are very loose fitting and as they age even worse which creates a lot of heat in the plug. I switched over to the SmartPlug system a few years ago, much better contact area, they make them for boats and RVs. I think Camping World is the only place to buy the RV version.
