Pin Box and Birds

Hi - 3rd Jayco, 1st 5th Wheel - did the search on Birds and Pin Boxes and came up with no results -- so thought i would ask ..... what do folks do to stop birds from building nest in their pin boxes ... Wasp, Bees, or Hornets too i guess - either in the front of back where electrical / brake away cable are located ..... looked for covers and was unsuccessful there too

Thanks for any thoughts, suggestions, comments

I don't own a fifth wheel, but I have a woodpecker problem at my home.....plastic owls from Menards, several of them surrounding the property have had an immediate effect on the destruction of my siding. They're 10 bucks. Worth a try.

Birds nests I pull out until they stop coming back. Never had bees in my pin boxes. Going on more frequent trips stops it too.

I use either one of our stacking jack pads or a piece of foam/pool noodle for the birds. I've never had bees or wasps.

I had problems with sparrows relentlessly building a huge nest in our previous FR Wildcat fiver. I pulled these basketball sized wads of nesting material out twice. Finally gave up and taped a large trash bag to the rear opening. It was crazy how much they would put in there.

We have had some Starlings build a few times so I cut out a cardboard piece and folded it in half to where it wedges itself in the opening. Its never gotten wet or blew out and solved the nesting problem.

Last trip- We woke up to a birds nest in our sanicon compartment, (about the same size as the pinbox area.) Removed the nest, and in a few hours it was back again. Removed that nest, and the birds started rebuilding right away. This time I put some peppermint oil on a cotton pad in there. The birds came back with grass in their beaks, and just sat there at the opening for a while, then left and didn't come back.

Here is a past thread on the subject. Look at the pics in Post#1 for what I did to solve the problem for me.

I’ve w problem ares with respect to birds. The first was the space under the topper roller. They’re really persistent, but I solved that one with nerf (and nerf-wanna be) footballs to fill the opening and pinwheels stuck into empty holes at the roller ends. The second area is the pin box and the space around the the box. Like Norty and Big John I covered the pin box openings with a cover. I made mine from black corplast and it’s held in place with “industrial” velcro. The space around the box seemed to be a new problem this year. I’ve filled the opening with pool noodle cut to fit.
I have to remove the footballs and pinwheels to travel but the corplast has been in place for 5-ish years, the pool noodles only since last season but have remained in place for a couple of short trips.

Jolson, I simply spray WD-40 in the pin box and it solved the problem for me. Once a month seems to do the trick. SKIDAWG
