Oil filter trick

Changed oil in our Accolade yesterday. As many know, oil filter access is difficult. I’ve always poked a hole in the bottom of the filter to drain the oil from it. In this chassis, that’s not too practical, oil still gets all over the place. Well, somebody on here posted a way to minimize the mess. Loosen the filter slightly, then put a gallon ziplock bag around it and then screw it off. When you get the filter off, close the zipper.
That worked so good! Only a few drops spilled.
Wow, a guy is never too old to learn a new trick!

There's a pretty good video re using the Ziplock bag. It shows the trick on a V-10 gas (not your diesel but same principle.) Glad it worked for you ..... I'm sure gonna try it next oil change. Good times and safe travels to ya.URL="http://

The baggie method works good, I have used it on filters that are mounted at an angle or upside down. On the Seneca I have always just drained the engine oil first and then start greasing the chassis and after that pull the oil filter and just bring it straight down and out from the bottom and it’s never spilled or dripped a bit. Now if you slip when bringing it down, then you are in trouble

My 2014 has an angled hose/line firmly clamped that prevents a simple down angle. A real PITA with full elbow extension sideways to reach and then inevitable spill. Getting a clamp to tighten is torture. Be happy for your easy removal. Of course, then there's the lubrication of the driveline zerks....

Been using the baggie method since I bought my Ram in 2010. I changed the oil filter on my riding mower a couple weeks ago and used a quart ziplock.

Speaking of driveshaft zerks, I couldn’t believe how thirsty those u-joints were. I greased them last spring, where did it go? Geez. Around 5000 miles. Some of them I put in 8-10 pumps before any grease came out around the caps. And it smelled old & stinky, so I pumped some more through using both zerks on each joint, until clean grease came out. Then cleaned off excess. I feel better!
