First thing I did was reinforce the frame under the bed. Cross pieces and a hinged support that swings when the bed is lifted, so it remains vertical. Also “walled off” storage area so the part accessed when bed is lifted is separated from that accessed from outside doors. Insulated the partition and used cedar plywood to skin the two sides. Added some hooks in the cargo area to hold stab jacks crank handle. Oh, and put in LED tap lights inside each opening.

Complete modification of the forward pass through. I put in a frame between the "outside pass through" and the "underbed storage area". Added a piece of plywood paneling. Removed the front mounted hinge, cut the bed platform and screwed down the front piece that covered the pass through permanently. Moved the hinge and the gas struts back and voila, I had a pass through that was completely separate from the storage area under the bed. This is the way Jayco should have built the underbed storage and pass thru storage from the beginning.

Atlee, do you have any problem raising the back end with the mattress on top? Ours is a bit heavy with the queen and a foam topper so I rigged a pvc pipe for a safety “crutch” to be extra safe. Don’t want the bed to fall on top of DW!

No we haven't had a problem. We have a RV queen 10" thick memory foam mattress. It is really heavy. The struts on our trailer are 100# ones. I do wish the platform was thicker, but I used the one that came with the trailer.

But back to your question, my struts holds up the bed fine. Before I put the mattress on the platform, I thought the struts were going to be too strong. Without the mattress, I was having a lot of problems opening the platform.

Thanks. I agree on the platform — I’ve been tempted to replace the plywood with thicker, but just braced it. I also added thin metal strips under the foot end for more stiffness when lifting it.

We opened up the end of the bed platform and framed in an opening to have quick access to the under the bed storage without lifting the bed every time.

Thread #22. Walled in the front pass through. Opened up under the bed and placed organizers. Replaced 1/2" bed platform with 3/4". Extended bed to full size (80") length. Made a BIG difference. DW loves it!
