Air Conditioner

Our air conditioner gave us a lot of trouble on our camp trip last week. (just over 4 months out of warranty.)

Temperatures reached to 103 during the day and were in the 60s at night.

On night #1, the air conditioner was started up at about 5:00 p.m. and quit blowing cold air at 4:00 a.m. the next morning. We opened windows, ran fans, and went back to bed. We turned it on the next morning and it worked.

It worked well all day. On night #2, it stopped blowing cold air again at 1:00 a.m. Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

Again, worked again the following morning when we woke up and turned it on. Then, it went out in the late afternoon/evening time. Dh had been looking at YouTube videos, and figured out that it was freezing up. On this third time it went out, we figured out that the thermostat fell out of the coils. Dh put it back. We also ran the fan only to break up the ice. Both worked for awhile.

Although the A/C didn't completely quit blowing cold air, we did notice the coils freezing when we checked it the next several times.

When we got home, a neighbor looked at it with dh and noticed a little room between the plenum and the top edges. They taped it up with a/c tape. Dh bought a new thermometer and put that in.

Neighbor said he isn't sure if it's the thermometer, the plenum, or a freon leak.
We are hoping it's not a freon leak since that would require a whole new a/c system when it's 4 months out of warranty.

What are your thoughts?

FWIW, we do keep reflectix on the skylights and two windows during the summer heat.

Try cleaning both sets of coils on the unit.

It sounds more like you had the fan speed on low and froze the coils. Run the fan on high and it should cure the problem.
