Atwood water heater problems
Hi..I have a 6 gal propane only HWT in a 2007 Jayflight 26jtx. The pilot light fires up and stays on, and the heater lights up when turned on. After anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes, an audible click occurs and the whole thing shuts down. It re-lights immediately just fine, but repeats the problem. I believe there isnt air in the line b/c I fire the stove up first. My propane bottle was likely down to 1/3 full, but I doubt that could be the problem.
Has anyone had such a problem?
Thanks.

Sorry, never had that problem but other members here have more experience with that. As they check this post in the next couple of days, they will be able to offer suggestions. But, welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum klboag!

Just guessing but if it gets too hot it will shut down. Make sure the exhaust is clear of bees nests and mud daubers. Another possibility is the thermocouple. It could be faulty and be shutting off the gas supply until you re light it. When you push the button it over rides the thremocouple. I'm sure others that know more than I do will chime in.

I agree ... this sounds like a safety shut-down of some sort. Problem with the regulator, maybe?

Are you sure there is water in the tank? Make sure the water heater tank is not set to bypass..

Hey Klboag - first of all - welcome to the forum! If you get a chance, come on over to the new member area and introduce yourself.
Let me make sure I totally understand what is going on - is the pilot also going out or just the main water heater burner?

thanks to everyone
Hi again, I finally found the new members area (Im kinda low tech), and filled it out.
Thanks to you all for the information. Just to respond... the tank was full of water, I cleared the burner tube, but didnt check the exhaust. The water never got fully heated, so I dont think overheating was a problem. It definitely sounds like a safety shut off. When it goes out.... both flame and pilot go out. I tested it by manually starting the pilot, turning on the heater (which fires up), then I even turned it back to pilot (and the pilot behaved and stayed on). Only when its left on and in its heating phase, does it click and shut down. I tried it over 3 days and it continued, even after the water in the tank was cool.
Ive read about the thermocoupler. So I've got full propane, will ensure full water and will try it this weekend (the trailer is on a local island here outside of Victoria).
Thanks again...Kent.

Me again !
Well Im back from Pender island. Took full propane, and it happened again. I even took off the thermocoupler and cleaned the contact with the thermostat. Im buying a new thermocoupler ($40) this week to install this weekend. I'll post my findings. Please continue with the suggestions, they are much appreciated.
Cheers...

Interesting problem. If the pilot stays on when just in pilot mode it makes me think no on the thermocouple, but stranger things have happened. It could be that when the burner is on, it is "blowing" the pilot away from the thermocouple and it is not staying hot enough?
Other thing you could do is take a multimeter and check continuity on the safety switches when it quits working. Maybe you have one intermittently malfunctioning?

Fixed !
Hi.... well I replace the combined "thermocoupler and pilot light unit" and the problem was fixed.
Cheers
