Bedroom Blinds/Window Coverings

Hi all,

Has anyone ever removed the blinds and the decorative blind covers in their bedroom area and replace with something different? I find that the covers around the window stick out too far to open up the cabinet doors (you lose about 2" with them there) and the light beige blinds do not keep the light out in the wee hours of the morning.

If you have switched these out, can you give me some ideas of what you've done to make it look nice and to keep the light out and how you went about doing it?
