We bring our 13 Ft Old Town Cayuga 130 Kayaks with us when on the road.

When we were towing a Travel Trailer we used a set of TracRacs that we purchased used off of Craigslist.

When we decided to go the 5th wheel route we added a Front Receiver Hitch to our GMC Sierra and then purchased a Thule Goalpost, and a set of Thule Roof Racks. On the Racks we used 2 sets of Thule Set and Glide kayak cradles, a pair of Thule Quikdraw straps in the front, and Thule straps for the rear.

When I had a truck with a cap, I did something similar. I had one bar on the cap and another on the cab and basically centered it.

Having a toy hauler made hauling the kayaks easy, I have 14' and 12' Jackson kayaks. They stack easily. Then I bought a golf cart, and everything changes. Trying a few different configurations just yesterday. So far, the kayaks have to go on top of the truck shell and the golf cart fits in the toy hauler. The golf cart makes for easy transport to the boat ramp. Scratching my head, looking at new toy haulers.Click image for larger version

We added Ladder Racks to the 5'7" bed of our new Dodge RAM 1500 Rebel. We are able to place 2 of our Hobie Revolution kayaks on top, and tow our Jayco 27DSRL behind with no issues :-)

Carrying a kayak

We carry inflatable kayaks. Mines a fishing kayak 30 pounds and my wife has one that’s 28 pounds. A little slower than hard ones but not much. So far so good.

Go to Autoanything and search for Erickson Big Bed hitch extender - 7605. It works great to haul your kayak in the bed of your F150.

We carry a 10 foot fishing kayak on top of our crewcab GMC. It fits in front of the 5th wheel with enough space to be safe. I'm not sure a 12 footer would allow enough room between the kayak and trailer.

We carry our kayaks on top of cab strapped to Thule roof rack bars. They were $346 two yrs ago, have held in tight and never any problem. We tow a fifth wheel, and just strap the kayaks forward enough to be away from camper.

But can you still tow the TT with this setup?

We carry 2 Ocean Kayaks using a simple Thule ring type carrier. These are only about 8ft. long, but they can certainly handle longer kayaks. We stack ours both to one side of the carrier as they nest together well, but you can mount one to each side as well.

Actually, the one thing I really like about this is the increased gas mileage I get with kayaks on the roof. They are much more aerodynamic than the flat front wall of the TT.

We find that some of the time, we have to take our canoe TO THE WATER! We load it on the Toyota roof rack and head to the water along with our fishing gear and 4-legged kids.

It rides on the Toyota while in camp, or on the trailer on the way to our destination.

oh... and don't ask why we have vessel numbers on our canoe...

Critical is the position of the stern of the kayak when making turns. What fits when the rig is straight is not always going to work when you make a turn. Likely you won't damage the kayaks but will the TT
We have cracks in our rockguard over the window from the stern of 18 foot sea kayaks hitting it during a turn.. We changed the mounting after that stupid boo boo and the boats are further forward on the TV.

I'm guessing the kitchen sink is in the back of the Toyota?

What I'd like to see are the inventive ways to carry kayaks when towing a fifthwheel, without having to add the constant wind noise of truck roof rack (or spending all of this summers travel budget).
My Eagle has the rear rack, but I'm uncomfortable lashing them to the ladder.

Truck roof racks don't have to make noise. That is a general statement that is SOMETIMES true.

While our configuration won't work on a fifth wheel our racks make no noise at all.. That would have driven us batty over 45000 miles of hauling a RV with kayak.

I just mention this as its not always true that racks make noise. Often the noise is from a strap.. and that can be dealt with by putting a twist in it.
