Greasy surprise

Just got back from a 300-mile round trip and noticed this splatter radiating from one of the wheel hubs (none of the others.) called the dealer (still under warranty) and was told to bring it in. I assume the seal is blown? Is that normal after only about 1,000 total miles? Anything I should be asking the service guys once there? Thanks in advance!

Could just be over greased, seal is only on the brake side. I'd clean it up and see what happens next trip unless the back side is worse.

I had a similar pattern on a pop-up I owned last year. I bought the replacement dust cover on the outer side of the axle (like is shown in your picture) and solved the problem. It also occurred right after I EZ-lubed the axles. The spatter was a result of excess grease.

Those covers came in pairs for around $5 last year. Cheap fix. You should be able to get them for free if under warranty.

Thanks all. Sounds like nothing disastrous.

Bought mine in under warranty for this and I believe the cause was too much grease in the hub.

With those bearing covers you will get that they are designed for boat trailers to help keep the water out of the bearings when you back the trailer into the water. If you put too much grease in them it will come out of the breather hole in the side. I would recommend that you switch to regular bearing caps. You can see the breather hole in the photo below. There is also supposed to be a plastic cover over the end of them to keep dirt off the spring mechanism and zerk fitting.

Those aren't bearing covers, it has an easy lube setup with drilled spindles. My last 3 have had those but I pull the wheels and pack the bearings by hand after learning the hard way on the first one.
My latest trailer did the same as yours LD and the brakes were slightly contaminated on one hub. I never added grease to it myself so it wasn't my fault. There was a recall on some 5er axles for the same issue so you may want to ask if they try to blame you and not cover it under warranty.

Personally, I would have it checked. Most likely over greased or the cap, is not sealed properly and some escaped.
