How hot should your hubs be?

Just towed my 2017 265RLSW 50 mi. Temp is 95' and sunny ran 65mph. Hubs are very warm. Not really hot. Yoi can leave your hand on them. Havent greased them since we got the TT. But have onky pulled it about 500 miles total since we got it. Going to give them a shot when we get back home.

General rule is if you can hold your hand on them w/o any discomfort your good to go. This is how I've tested mine in the past. I just purchased a laser temp gun and plan to shoot my hubs next trip or I'd give you an approximate running temp now. I'm sure someone will chime in with a running temp from their gun.

I would do some reading before you start pumping axle grease!

Running temps on my hubs tends to be 20-25 degrees above ambient temps. Unless one side has been running in direct sunlight for an extended period of time they are generally within 2-4 degrees of each other. The direct sunlight can sometimes add another 5-10 degrees above the shaded side. I usually check them with the IR gun every couple of hours when we take rest breaks or get fuel.

1st timer here: I've been lurking for a while. Thanks to everyone for their input on trailer issues!

To add to above...the curb side of the trailer should have slightly warmer bearings/hubs than the centerline side. Most roads are cambered for rain...putting more pressure on the curb side. Found this out after 14 years of sailboat ownership...

To add:

I run Bearing Buddies in my dual axle boat trailer...about 4200 pounds. I hand pack the bearings, fill the BB with grease and install. Add grease till the BB moves about halfway up. Run the boat about 30 minutes at speed and check. If it needs more due to air that escaped, I add. Then don't touch them for a year. I do check each and every stop and they stay just above ambient unless I've been braking hard. We are seriously looking for a trailer to continue our over the road vacations...so I'm hoping this knowledge will help me as well with the trailers...
Only 1 set of bearings in 14 years. So something is right...
