Inverter trouble with TV

Hi all,

Got a little 150w Inverter for the lighter socket in my jayco 267bhsw for the TV it came with (Rocky mountain edition). It works for about 30 minutes and then the TV shuts off (and a red light shows on the inverter). We've had issues before with inverters, and I'm wondering if it has to do with limits on the lighter socket itself. The TV itself is LED and only requires 10 watts - do I need to get a lower-power inverter? What else can I try? Thanks.

Welcome mani55,

It sounds like a bad inverter to me. Is it getting hot to the touch? With only ten watts being demanded it shouldn't. I had a past inverters cooling fan fail on me and it would go into thermal overload protection and shut itself off.

If you cycle the power on it does it come right back to life?

The lighter socket should have enough current carrying capacity for this small load. Besides you still see power to the inverter when it's failing with the red light.

Good luck.

It's brand new, and not hot to the touch at all. I've had issues before trying to use an inverter through a lighter socket - my last one (older 300w) was fine for most things just not a TV or charging a laptop. Arguably, if it's not the inverter then what else?

Have you measured the voltage of your battery when this shuts off? The red light sometimes indicates "low voltage" and the unit has it's own safety shut-off when the voltage becomes too low.

My guess is the tv wants more watts than the inverter is rated for. You said 150 watts is your current one and your old one was 300w and it worked fine.

I use a 500w for my tv and satellite.
