New Jayco Owner

Hello Everyone,

Just purchased my first Jayco (Former Keystone Cougar owner). I got the Jay Flight 28BHS model and pick it up the middle of August. I was just wondering what are the first things mods or things you all purchased when you first bought your RV/TT?

Wish List so far:
Generator
Surge Protector
Replace Mattress with Memory Foam

The screen door handle bar is hands down the best first mod we did.

Welcome and congrats on your new Jay Flight 28BHS ! Roof vent covers should be on your list as well as Progressive Industries EMS protection.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Not sure what the screen door handle mod is so I'll start researching that one. I did the Progressive Industries mod for surge protection on my last trailer, that's definitely high on the list. We also replaced the original mattress with a memory foam mattress that was way more comfortable. Like the digital thermostat mod, will look into that too. Plan on scrapping the 12v battery and getting the two 6V golf cart batteries. We do a lot of dry camping.

1. Not really a mod but X-Chocks made a big difference in how much motion occurs in the trailer once they are in place.

2. Two small adhesive levels on the driver's side front of the trailer to check level when you're setting up. You get the trailer level the first time by using a level placed in the refrigerator freezer compartment. Once level you attach the adhesive levels to the outside of the trailer (front, driver's side) and you can now easily check if the trailer is level whenever you pull into a campsite.

3. If you don't have electric stabilizers get a cordless electric drill with the correct size socket to fit over the stabilizer adjusting nuts. Makes the job MUCH easier not having to crank them up and down. I was surprised at how powerful this newer battery powered drills are. I actually have to adjust the torque setting down so as not to lift the trailer when putting the stabilizers down.

Congratulations on the Jay Flight and welcome to the forum.

I suggest a digital voltmeter that plugs into your Travel Trailer (TT)'s 12v outlet. There are several inexpensive styles in Amazon. The meter will show your battery state of charge, your Tow Vehicle (TV) voltage at the trailer, and your converter's voltage charging your TT battery(s). For dry camping it is a must to be sure you don't ruin you batteries (less of an issue with the 6v batteries) by discharging them too far.

How we doing at spending your money?

Great suggestions, thanks everyone. I just sold my old 2010 Keystone about 6 months ago, so I have a lot of this stuff already thankfully. But if the new trailer didn't break the bank yet all these mods and accessories surely will lol.

What about power cable accessories? My trailer is a 50 amp. I was thinking of getting to 50a to 30a extension cable and a 30a to 15a dogbone so I'm covered for all power options wherever I go.

Careful when running the 50 amp system on anything other than 50 amp receptacle

Well that would really suck because I would never be able to plug in at home or use most generators that are out there.

You can do these things just be careful of power use.
You have 12000 watts of power on a 50 amp and only 3600 on a 30 amp. Just be aware of the power use when using the dog bone you can trip a breaker pretty quickly.

Well the only time I plug into my house is when I'm at home getting the trailer prepped. I never turn the AC on. Might run the TV, lights and Awning but that's about it.

Yes it surely does but look into getting a 50 amp hookup at your house. A little pricey but you dont want to burn up your electrical system
50 AMP is very very good system but..... very easy to blow the system if not using 50 amp
You could prong to 30 amp but I wouldnt use AC or microwaves ..clothes washer and dryer .
I looked into getting a camper with 50 amp but I have a slew of friends that do electrical for work and they advised me to stay with 30 amp

I read a lot about the pros and cons of 30a and 50a because I wanted to stick to 30a if possible. Unfortunately the trailer I got was a 50a and that's all that was available. Then I found some people that thought the 50a was better. It seems like it's hit or miss.

Yes it's a flip of coin but I like my 30 amp because I use two small honda generators and parallel them and it runs my camper as if I was plugged into 30amp ... the Honda are very good on gas consumption and very quiet and very reliable .

Congrats! First thing I did, was crawl around underneath and check for openings that weren't sealed up. Found 3, and caught two while still at the dealer. Sealed up with RTV.
