No cathode in hot water tank
All I have is a plastic plug for the hot water, do I need a cathode?

No. There are two water heater brands. Suburban and Atwood. One uses a cathode, the other only has a plastic plug. I forget which brand is which but your Jayco uses the one with the plastic plug only. I think it's the Atwood if I remember correctly.

You are correct. Suburban brand water heaters have the cathode, Atwood does not.

Yeah I think it has something to do with the tank liner material but I am not positive , mine in the old camper had a cathode and this one in the new one just has a plastic plug.

I've asked the dealer about this before. Since our hot water heaters are lined with glass, no need for the cathode rod.

Is there a mix-up in terminology here? Isn't the rod that's being referred to in this thread called a sacrificial anode?

Suburban = Steel
Atwood = Aluminum
No anode in the aluminum tank.

I've had both, several times, and the Atwood is superior.

I have the Atwood, both propane and electric. Have the plastic drain plug. What I don't see is where does the electric heating element screw into the tank. I sure can't see it from the outside access door. Could it possibly be on the opposite side???

Yes, it's on the inside of the heater. Follow the wires to the black cover [you may have to separate some styrofoam] and you'll find it. Atwood p/n is 92249.
