Question Pump strainer goo

Hello everyone! We are new to the RV world with our new Jay Flight SLX 195RB that we got in June. I was preparing to winterize it and decided to check the pump strainer. Good thing I did. See before and after photos of what I found. It was some black goo that coated the screen. I used a fine brush to clean it out and saved some contamination to show my dealer. Has anyone else ever noticed this type of goop in their strainer? We have used a filter to fill our fresh tank since day one but we bought this 2017 model in June 2018 which means it was built in 2016... Just curious.

Congratulations on the Jay Flight and welcome to the forum.

YUK! Now that you've cleaned the TT strainer, it might be a good idea to get a new external filter for your water line for next season. It's possible your external filter was loaded with that 'stuff' and wasn't filtering.

Welcome and be sure to use bleach regular in the FW-tank, for cooking and drinking use bottled water you can bring from your home tap. Some campsites on lakes, pump from the lake and chance on algae in your FW-tank is a possibility or some other plant growth.

As ALJO said that is from your fresh water tank and is algae. If you use a filter that removes Chlorine taste your are putting water in your tank that also has chlorine removed.

It looks more like VOCs to me, if your water source was from a well this happens in many areas after the water sits. I have never heard of a campground pumping water from a lake, this would never be approved by any health dept as potable water. We get this at home in a bathroom we never use, turn on the sink water after months of water sitting and it looks like oil coming out. Google VOCs and read about it.

Every time you put on a new water filter you need to run water through it to flush it prior to hooking the water hose to your TT. The stuff you flush out of the new filter is black like the crud you showed.

Thats not carbon particles from the water filter in that strainer, carbon filters are pre washed and ready to use, thats organic material, read about VOCS, volatile organic compound

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. I have been reading the hell out of all the info on this site. Awesome info here for sure!

We have only used city water at one campground which I know has good water. Our filter was rinsed when new and no it is not charcoal particles for sure - too soft. I am leaning towards the algae suggestion.

As far as our fresh tank goes, we have only ever used potable water sources with our filter in place. I will be concentrating on sterilizing my water system before using next season for sure. Thanks for everyone's input I never thought I'd get this many replies ! I will read up on those VOC suggestions too.

So much to learn for sure! Everyone here has been great too. Thanks again and I will update if I find out anything more.

Snowing here in Medicine Hat today so good day to stay in and do some more research...
