Post Recommendations: Brake controller and WDH

I am getting ready to purchase a Jayco Jay Feather 20BH, it has a tongue weight of 505, dry weight 4386, GVW 5500. I have done some searching online regarding WDH systems and brake controllers, I have found a lot of systems. I want the best for my vehicle and trailer. My vehicle is a 2018 Dodge Durango SXT, it is also equipped with the wiring and connection point for an electric brake.
What is considered to the best WDH and brake controller?

I use a Tekonsha Primus controller that I got on eBay for around $50 new.

I like my Equalizer tow hitch. It's not the most expensive and "best" out out there, but it works well for me.

On my previous 1/2 ton CrewMax I used this one—> https://www.walmart.com/ip/Tekonsha-...ntrol/26962868

Honestly I wouldn’t penny pinch. This is about the best on the market and works very well. The link I provided may not be the cheapest so do some searching, maybe Amazon.

X2 on the Prodigy P3. I have a P2 which I've had for going on 14 seasons now. I've used it with 2 different trailers and 3 different tow vehicles. The P3 came out years after I bought my P2.

Walmart's price is high. Check Amazon.

The P3 gets my vote, great controller.

Another vote for the P3.

If you are looking for something a little less fancy, the Tekonsha Voyager is a great little controller for the price. It's been on the market for many years but just plain works. The one I have in my old Ram is nearing 29 years old and has probably well over 500K towing miles on it and it has never skipped a beat.

You must never remove the TT and pull it everywhere, that over 17,000 miles a year.

Typo on my part. It should have read 20 years not 29.

I used to do hotshot work for a side job.

+1 for the p3... It's inertia based rather than time based so you will get more proportional braking.

WDH I'd go with the reese round bar setup.

I have the Reese Brakeman Compact for my 1/2 ton. Never use it though because the one on my F250 is integrated, and that's our main tow vehicle. For the WDH, I use the Husky Center Line TS. Works well - with the added benefit of getting in a workout every time you use it!

The P3 is a fine controller. My issue is where you have to mount the controller and how “stuck on “ it looks after install. I didn’t want my knees bumping in to anything. I wanted something that looked more like a clean factory install.
Check out the Redarc elite Pro not cheap but a much better mounting and set up. Easy install
IMHO. Looks great and works fantastic. FWIWYMMV.

I use a Tekonsha P3 brake controller and a BlueOx SwayPro WDH. Very happy with both.

When I bought my first trailer in 2005 I asked the same question. Back then the most votes went to the Prodigy. Seems to be a pattern here. I still have the original one I bought. Its just the prodigy, not the P1,P2, or P3 so I assume the newer models work even better.
Go grandpa, you mentioned the appearance of it. Maybe they have changed it but mine easily snaps in and out of the mount. When not towing I can take it off the dash and store it in the glove box but I just leave it where it is. Honestly I haven't seen any aftermarket installed controllers that didn't look "stuck on" as you described. Guess it's just the nature of the beast.

The Redarc Tow Pro Elite mounts completely behind dash any position vertical or horizontal there is a control knob that mounts in the same space as a round 12v socket. (Cig lighter)
That’s all you see. No empty bracket Velcro. It’s pricey but it works flawlessly and it looks great in my Silverado.

Check out some of the install pictures.
The days of snapping in/out and carrying the control head around have been eclipsed. This is much more like a clean factory install. Imo

How do you manually apply the trailer brakes with that controller?

Two quick pushes of control knob puts it in manual and it applies he brakes at what ever bias you have selected 0-9 or just dial it up (just like the squeeze paddles)it’s proportional. 0-9 it’s very tactile easy to fine tune either in Manuel or auto. There’s a good utube video about it.

I have the P3 with no problems

With that weight I would recommend the Andersen which works great for me with my rig which is only a little smaller than the one you have.

Agree with P3 for brake control.

Reese Steadi-Flex for WDH.

Check streetsideauto.com for prices before buying any WDH.
