roof vent open or closed when towing??
should the roof vent in our bathroom closed when towing? I left it partially open on a 4hr trip and when we got inside the camper it stunk like sewer gas inside. is this because the roof vent was open and the vent for the black water is right next to it causing the gas to become pulled inside or is there something else going on here? thanks.

I always shut all vents when towing, just to prevent them from being ripped off by the wind. The hinges alone are not made to withstand the wind forces applied when going down the road at speed.
As to your odor problem, the raised vent could create a vacuum in the space just behind it, using the same principle that an airplane wing, being curved on top and flat underneath, creates a vacuum that causes lift. If your black tank vent is nearby, that vacuum could cause odors to be sucked into the vent opening. The only way to be sure is to try closing the vent during travel, and see if that cures the problem. If the problem doesn't go away, then something else is going on.

I would not leave mine open unless you have vent covers. Even then, if you are getting odors just close it and see if that is the problem.

keep the vents closed during travel if you don't they could get blown off. But if one does get blown off then you can always look along side of the road and find one there. You shouldn't have odors if you are using enough deodorant in the black tank.

I recently put on covers and on the last trip (only 1 hour away) I left the vents open, there wasn't any septic odors either. If having the vent open causes the odor, I would travel with it closed.

I have a MaxxAir cover on the front vent and a TurboMaxx fan on the rear. The only time I ever close my vents is if the A/C is on, it's too cold outside when camping or when I store it underground (to prevent moisture and dust from entering the unit). Otherwise, they're open- winter or summer, rain or shine, snow or fog, towing or parked. Never had a problem and it keeps the air inside from becoming stale.

I always tow with the vents open, except in very cold weather. I have vent covers on all 3 roof vents.

OK ... I still need to get a cover (on the long list of things to do) and install it. gonna re-treat the black water tank and keep the vent closed next time we head out to see if it helps. Thx!

I always leave my vent open (with a vent cover) ... especially when traveling ... gets the smell of camping out of the TT on the way home. Maybe try a different black tank treatment? Or double the amount?
Unless ... is it possible that your gray water tank wasn't fully closed when you emptied your black water tank? If so, the smell might be coming from your sink/shower drains. Any backflow from black to gray will not only leave a stink coming from your sink/shower drains but you'll need to disinfect your fresh and city water lines. Not trying to scare you. Just trying to offer some, been there/done that advice.

hotrod51 - did you use a tank treatment? I am begining to believe they are more or less a marketing ploy and not needed. I know it stinks no matter what treatment you apply. Nothing short of soaking it all in something very nasty would prevent that - and it shouldn't.
What I'm wondering is do the treatments help the breakdown of the solid wastes.
To the OP - when we first got our new trailer, we used to get stink when traveling. I believe it was coming from the shower drain as that is very low - and sloshing could have put stinky stuff into the p-trap. Now we plug all the drains and are smell free....
