Sealing roof with Eternabond

Currently my 2018 Jay Feather 23RL does not have any roof leaks and I’d like to keep it that way. This spring I would like to remove the existing self-leveling caulk up there and give myself smoother surfaces to apply the Eternabond on. What is the best way to remove the existing caulk? I certainly don’t want to damage the rubber membrane in the process. Any suggestions from someone who has done this?

I suggest leaving the caulk in place and going right over it with the Eternabond tape. You risk tearing the roof membrane by removing lap sealant that is still bonded to the membrane.

Been there, done that.

X-2 Just clean the caulk with acetone and apply the Eternabond.

X3 Dampen a clean rag with acetone, rub gently changing clean to clean area of rag frequently. Do not pour acetone on roof! Caution, highly flammable and not good to breath acetone. If you feel light headed STOP, get away and breathe fresh air. Do not do indoors or near a source of ignition.

I’ve cleaned with mineral spirits with good results. After cleaning with it I washed the roof and let it dry before putting the E’bond down. When you put it down take care not to stretch it, it’s suggested that it can peel up. A roller should be used to insure good adhesion.
Good stuff, very sticky!

Saw a guys pictures who had removed almost all his self leveling sealant and applied the Eternabond on his seams. It looked amazing and I wish I had that kind of time and patience. He used a heat gun and a plastic scrapers and slowly heated and scraped as he went until it was smooth and level. That being said, I didn’t have that kind of time or a heat gun, so I did what the others have said above

After cleaning with the Eternabond cleaner, I went right over my existing caulk and after 3 years it still looks new and conforms nicely. As mentioned above make sure you don't stretch it and use a quality roller to ensure adhesion. Also applied Dicor self leveling lap sealant to all edges.

I didn't take it all down, but I used a 2 " plastic putty knife to take the high points off and the Eternabond went on much smoother. Just cosmetic though because it sticks to anything. The caulk is more pliable when its warm so a properly used heat gun or hair dryer may help make the job easier.
