What caused this????

Started cleaning and wax my 195RB and found this odd hole near the top or the rear end. Doesn't look at a gunshot, rock impact or any other thing I can think of. Just puzzles me trying to figure a cause. I will smear in some caulk to keep water out but just curious if anyone else has had this occur on their aluminum skins.

Probably water intrusion causing electrolysis underneath.

Do you have a stone or gravel driveway where you park the rig? Have you been to a campsite that has the same? It could be from a lawnmower.

I would check for electrical arcing like a short to ground from the inside of the trailer. Is this near the power cord location or the electrical converter? I ask because it may circumvent the protection of the breakers in the trailer. If it is arcing it may not be enough to trip a breaker.

Is there a missing picture?

A picture would be really helpful. With the small description, my first thought is electrolysis. What do the edges look like? With no picture it is just a shot in the dark. If it is electrolysis, just dabbing caulk on it will not fix the issue.

The hole is located about 5 inches below the top of the back of the RV somewhat near the center. There is no interior wiring near that position. I might have had a leak from a screw that backup through the roof edge close to there but I sealed it up with Etearnabond last year.

I am thinking the rock strike from a mower could be the cause but still seams odd. I will seal it up and watch it over time to see if it comes back or gets bigger.

I can't tell by the picture, however I suspect a very clear and close up picture would reveal more details as to what happened. If it is corrosion, the metal surrounding the hole will be thinner at the edges with no discernable lip around the edges of the hole, but if it is a hole made by an object, then the metal surrounding the hole would have a lip with the metal ridge facing inwards (assuming the object that created the hole came from outside of the RV)

Try punching a hole with an ice pick in an empty drink can and you will see what I am referring too. The protrusion will have a small lip facing inwards.

Being that high and no electric nearby, still say stone strike.

Ok, absolutely bizarre! On my PC, I do not see any image or even a sign that an image should be attached, even when using multiple browsers. The phone on the other hand shows the image. Just bizarre! hummm....

It is definitely looks as a puncture.

Aluminum is strong but easily punctured. Could you have bumped into a tree branch?

if you look close the AL has a bend inward into the hole indicating either a rock or a branch... a tough branch for sure.. but my bet is a rock from a passing lawnmower... as stated earlier...

That posted pic is so out of focus, at least on my computer. You really aren't missing much.

Perhaps this helps for those who can't see the image. I always choose the advance option and attach images, however I suspect that there is another way to simply add a picture that doesn't show as well. I use the Windows "Snipping" tool for most of my shared images.

Also, the image is pretty good for most cameras, as it is hard to get a clear image of a hole smaller than thumb nail as I have tried with my phone for other items I wanted to get a picture of. In any case, it would take a better camera than most phones have in order to get a clear picture of something so small. ~CA

The metal looks clean. The hole looks like it is pushed inwards. There are multiple locations missing paint like it was hit with multiple objects. Looks like an impact hole, maybe from mower debris or bird shot from a rifle, or something similar.

IMHO, If the siding is sound, being that it's not bent inward, something would have had to been at high velocity to make such a hole. Bullet fragments maybe?

A friend of mine who parks his class A motorhome behind gates beside his house noticed some bull's eyes on the windshield of his Class A motorhome. He thought they might be from a weed eater until one day he heard the distinct sound of someone shooting a BB gun from the yard above and behind his. The kid finally admitted to shooting the windshield of the motorhome. His dad took care of both.
