I travel about 5k per year and do mine every spring prior to the camping season. I fully admit it is overkill but I feel better doing a visual inspection of my spindles, bearings, brakes etc.

Depending on the mileage you put on yours every other year or so may be sufficient.

I take mine in every other year and have them inspected and repacked. Probably 10-15k or less.

Overkill here too... every year with less than 5,000 miles travelled.
Burned out a bearing last year, stranded, paid too much for one bearing replacement ($1400) in Louisiana.
Changed out the 'made in China' bearings, including the new ones.

Where do you take a big camper to get them inspected and repacked?

Check tire dealers. Most will do it but not all. They need a lot of space so an appointment is called for.
