1992 Jayco Cardinal SD

I am trying to build up the confidence to start working on the '92 Cardinal that my grandmother purchased new. It has not been on a trip since 1998 and I'd like to get it back out on the road. I know for a fact that on the left rear corner where the hook to keep the roof latched down sits, there is rotten wood. All the caulk on the trailer is in need of attention. Is the roof, considering there is no rot on the actual roof, strong enough for me to get on top and take the strip off that goes down the middle and clean all the old caulk off and replace, I guess put in all new screws with a dab of silicone as well. The last time I raised the top, last summer, I saw absolutely no evidence of water inside.
