Interior Light Issue

I have a 2005 Jayco POP-Up and I am having an issue with the interior lights. Every light bulb is blowing as soon as they turn on. I replaced the bulbs and the new bulbs blow right away as well.

I’m not sure if it is related but the vent fan will not turn off. It is on constantly even when the switch is in the off position.

Thanks for any advice

Welcome to the forum.

Get a voltmeter and check the 12v side!

Is this on battery or when plugged into shore power?

Fan issue is most likely the switch.

It is plugged in to the 30A at a campsite.

The fan will get faster but won’t turn off. You think that’s the switch?

There seems to be too much power going to the lights. The fan is on the same circuit. The fuse is fine. Where would I check the 12v at the power converter?

Nate,

Is this a new-to-you camper, or have you had it awhile?

If it’s new, is this the first time you’ve been out with it?

Can you touch metal on the outside of the pop-up without being shocked?

Nate, when you say “vent fan” are you talking about the fan inside your power converter box?

I’m talking about the fan on the ceiling. It is a northern breeze by ventline

TW,

Is it possible the camper’s drawing more than 120 volts from the pedestal and his breakers aren’t catching it?

Try disconnecting from the campsite 30A supply and plugging in another bulb. That will insure you're being powered by the battery only. If the bulb doesn't blow when you're disconnected from campsite power then there is probably an issue with the converter.

I doubt it. The breakers are finicky, they should trip. This sounds like faulty wiring or failed converter. The reason bulbs blow are, too much electricity flowing through the element of the bulb or faulty wiring. I'd check voltage at the bulb. Low voltage causes bulbs to blow, not high. Bulbs will only draw their wattage. So, at 12.8V, a 20 watt bulb will draw current of 20/12.8V=1.56 amps. If there is a lot of resistance in the wiring however, the voltage drops. So if voltage at the bulbs is 10v, your current is 20/10=2.0 amps. This is what blows bulbs. This tells me the problem lies early on in the system. Check voltage at the pedestal as well.

I am not. I hadn’t heard of those until recently. I’ll have to get one.

I am sure you are looking at a problem in the converter. Look for a loose wire.

Check the output voltage when off shore power.
