rotten egg smell

My brother-in-law owns a jayco popup and just returned from an extended weekend camping trip. He said that he hooked to the city water and started to run the hot water and got a rotten egg smell. He tried to run water through the system to see if he could flush out the smell but it didn't work. he then started running cold water and that smelled fine. Does anyone have any ideas of what this could be? The obvious would be the water heater but he emptied that and didn't see anything out of the ordinary. Any help would be appreciated.

Had the same thing happen to me after leaving well water in the hot water heater tank a few months between trips. It really stank. Solution was to bleach and sanitize the fresh water system and then drain including of course the hot water tank. The way to prevent this in the future is to drain the hot water tank after each trip, which I now do.

Hydrogen peroxide. Put a bottle in hot water heater, cap it off and fill I up. Let it sit for a few hours then rinse. Got to make sure to empty the hot water heater if it gonna sit for more than a couple weeks.

Thanks for the responses. That is what I told him, but I just wondered if perhaps I missed something.
