Cool gutter downspout mod

Saw this in a video on YouTube and decided to give it a try. It's an alligator clip with a solid copper wire attached. Works like magic to keep the water off the side of the coach!

Any idea of the science behind why it works? I am intrigued enough to give it a try regardless....

We had a huge rain storm go by before this picture was taken and they work great, water was streaming off like mad. Even the gutters above the slideouts got a workout!

This magic is actually surface tension if you're using a solid piece of copper.

Capillary action works with fibers or other media that provides many pathways for liquid. Soil is a good example of a medium that capillary action works with, and of course every paper towel commercial demonstrates capillary action.
