Removing it won't hurt anything. But I'd retain it for resale. If it were me, I'd keep "soft" items in it. Dish towels, Solo cups, extra sponges, etc. If you do remove it, just fill the holes with Elmers Wood filler then use a furniture touch-up pen to match the stain as close as possible.
