The magic O/D off buttom
Following my experience with the transmission overheating (previous thread: Transmission oil all over the place) I bought a scan gauge 2 and went out on another trip.
Had to travel about 4 miles in traffic to get out of the city, such that I had tranny temps of 195F by the time I hit the highway. At highway speeds things did not get much better with the occasional 220 on some relatively low grade inclines. Twenty minutes up the road I pull off on to a 2 lane road, to be slowed down by a truck travelling 35mph. Temps got up to 225 and stayed there. Thought about pulling over, and then remembered the over-drive off button. Never looked back. Temps fell to 180 and only briefly say 200 on a couple of hills.
The trip back was even better. Stuck to the rule of 50mph or lower keep O/D off, over 50mph turned it on. Did not see the temperature rise above 188.
Going out again this weekend to see if I can maintain these temperatures on a different trip.
will keep you posted!!
