anode cross threaded

Not for me.

My son's friend seems to have a cross threaded anode in the HWH. The bung on the heater is straight but there's a very obvious angle to the anode. Suburban water heater 12 gallon. Can the bung be re-tapped? Never ran into this before.

Yes. It can be tapped. I just traced a fitting on my Atwood a few weeks ago when I found compromised threads.

Have them double check the size, but my guess would be 1/2" NPT.

Is the plug actually cross threaded or is the anode on the back of plug bent?

I guess that's a possibility. I haven't physically seen it myself. All my son has told me is that the anode looks like it's in the water on an angle.

I'm gonna ask my son to ask them to remove it and see just how bad the threads could be. If we re-tap it, will it be a permanent fix? In other words, will he have problems in future anode replacement?

It should be a permanent fix.

Since it's a steel tank, my bet would be the plug threads are messed up not the tank.

If it's cross threaded, it's a guaranteed leak. Guess I don't understand what is bent. The anode rod could be bent and the tank drain could be threaded ok.

The tap needed is a 3/4 inch tapered pipe tape. Been there done that. I just used a little extra Teflon tape.

The best I can explain (deleted the pic from my phone like an idiot)

The HWH bung for the anode is in the tank correctly. Looks like when the anode was put into the tank at the factory (new unit), they screwed it in on a angle. So far, he tells me it doesn't leak at all. He was just gonna replace it for maintenance and noticed it was in crooked so he left it alone and got ahold of me.

I find that the 3/4 tapered pipe thread in my tank, same 12 gal. Suburban, does not take much to seal it. Tell him when he replaces it, give a a few wraps of teflon tape and just hand thread and tighten until it's snug.

Mine never leaks and I don't even have to replace the teflon tape after flushing it.

The threaded opening on some are on a slight angle downward to begin with.

I've worried about mine since new on my 2022 321 RSTS. First it looked crooked, then I thought the initial few threads looked stripped, then it seemed like it would only start at an angle, then it dripped all the time until i was worried about tightening too much. Now after a few times in and out after lubing the threads a bit, and more tape... I guess it's fine, but still always has me wondering.
