Blue Ridge Parkway

Happy New Years to all. We are beginning to plan our first RV of 2018, and we are going to Travel the Blue Ridge Pwky from Cherokee NC to Va. We are looking for things to see and places to visit, and campgrounds to stay at along the way. Also is their any tunnels that are to low for RV's?

Any ideas and suggestions are most Appreicated.

To be the most helpful, I will direct you to the NPs website to get all the best info on the parkway. There is a strip map they provide that shows every mile of the road and info on upcoming sites and services. Its a little hard to follow at first since its not like a regular page map but rather it is linear from one end of the parkway to the other. Online there are various private web sites that offer info.

Along the way there are numerous historic and natural sites that are all marked on the map. You can exit the parkway every few miles for services like fuel, groceries, and private CG's. There are a handful of NP campgrounds on the parkway and they are all detailed on the map. All are w/o hookups but are free and not reservable. There are also many small towns along the way that might offer interesting activities depending on your interests. I would also direct you to stop at all the visitor centers along the way where there is a wealth of info.

Speed on the parkway is 50 which may seem slow, but you will likely face minimal if any traffic and there are no stoplites or stop signs so you just cruise. We have done all of the parkway and plan on making another trip later this spring. Our experience is that even with the lower speed limit, you can cover just about the same net miles for the day as you do on a regular highway or Interstate because you never have to stop unless you want to and when you stop, there are no lines or searching for parking for your rig.

Enjoy. If you are looking for another similar experience I would suggest the Natchez Trace running from just south of Nashville Tn all the way to Natchez Miss. It is a pleasant and enjoyable drive with similar stops and sites along the way. We have actually taken it a couple times when visiting family on the Miss Gulf coast since it is a no hassle trip pulling the TT and ready made places to overnite. Get there rested and relaxed without the white knuckle of interstate driving.

2X on visiting the NPS website. As I recall, the south end of the Parkway has smaller tunnels etc. You might not be able to get into them based on your RV size.

Close to Sparta NC is the New River State Park which is very nice and has numerous activities and nice campground, most with full hookups and 50A service. Also about an hour away (S) of the Parkway is Stone Mountain State Park which has lots of hiking trails along with a very nice campground. It has a few full hookups and a lot of 50A and 30A service. Rates are very reasonable at both CGs. To find more about either of these CGs go to North Carolina State Parks. Each has a map of sites etc along with activities.

Around Grandfather Mountain, Blowing Rock and Boone are several CGs and there is a lot to do around these areas. You could easily spend a week in the vicinity and depending on the time of year lots of activities.

One suggestion is if it's from March to November you'll be traveling I'd recommend reservations at either of the State Parks mentioned. You'll understand why when you get there.

What is the height of your RV. As mentioned, many low tunnels on the south end...watch clearances.
