Extended Warranties

Who has purchased the dealer offered extended warranty packages and have ever benefited from them? My experience with car extended warranties has been that putting equal amount into bank account was far more beneficial. If I needed the money for a repair it was there. If I didn't need the money it stayed in my pocket, not a dealer's.

I have never bought an extended warranty but I'm about to on a new Subaru Outback I just purchased. It's $1700 for year 4 thru 10 covering all the electronics. There's so much on the new autos that it's got me trying it for the first time.

We are on our 5th Subaru and we have had extended warranties on I believe four of them. We have had only one claim with $100 deductible which maybe had a total repair bill of $200. So I feel somewhat stupid for laying out probably at least $1000 each. Oh what we could have done with that money.

The dealers make it sound like it would be a catastrophe to have something go wrong. Many things will go bad during the original warranty period if they are things that are susceptible to failure.

Good to hear! Maybe I'll rethink the ext warranty. It's just that when I went to pick it up the "radio" (which is more that just a radio) would not sinc up to my phone. Two hours later they ordered a new radio which I'm going in this Tuesday to have installed. Who knows, maybe it was a ploy to get me to buy the warranty . Or maybe I should have kept my Honda.

We have purchased extended warranties on our trailers - the 1st one through the dealer and the next through the place where we store the unit. Our deductible is 0 if they do the repairs and $50 elsewhere. Have they paid for themselves - for us, most definitely.

We have also purchased extended warranties on our truck - we are on our 3rd extended warranty on our F450 diesel. Why? Because we have had to have major repairs on the truck during one of the warranty period. One repair without the extended warranty would have cost us approximately $15,000.
