National Parks are Overcrowded and Closing their Gates

From WSJ and RV Business.

MOAB, Utah — Southeast Utah is among the most popular tourist destinations in the U.S. with two national parks and millions of undeveloped acres, according to reporting by Allison Pohle for the Wall Street Journal.

But visitors are increasingly spending more time sitting in their cars as they wait to access the vast outdoors.

“Anywhere you go, there’s going to be a line,” said Libby Preslock, who on a recent Thursday arrived at Arches National Park at 9 a.m. only to find that it was full and signs encouraged visitors to come back in three to five hours. She then headed to the area’s other national park, Canyonlands, where she waited about half an hour to get inside.

After being hemmed in everyone wants to be out and about. The big information for a while will be what to avoid.

I'm looking at my backpacking gear and thinking out it may be time to reevaluate. Even parks like Yellowstone are empty 1/2 mile from the road.

34 years ago we bought 50 acres on the top of a mountain. Its on a paved road with full utility access and no neighbors for miles. We have literally thousands of acres to explore if we want to.

No rules or regulations. I can target shoot on my own private range with no issues. Pee in the bushes and nobody cares.

The property value has increased 20 fold and my taxes are a fraction of what I would pay at a campground if we camped as much as we do now.

Some might say its the same every time. For us that's an advantage.

I camped with parents for 15 years, and then another 15 with my family before we decided to get out on our own. It was the best investment I ever made.

That's what my brother is doing after a few years of rolling around in a converted van. Buying some land. But I'm gonna try rolling around the country still and find out if I have any patience at all.

Back in the sixties my parents friends bought a 5 acre parcel in the Sierras.
They would park there trailers there and camp in privacy.

When we were in Moab a couple weeks ago, Arches was at capacity by 8 a.m. and people were being turned away and told to come back later. Canyonlands was not very crowded. We got to Zion by 7:45 am and had to wait an hour to get on the shuttle. Bryce wasn't too crowded in the morning, but definitely packed by lunch. Moral of the story...if your going, you better go early!

Dan, at Bryce or Zion, was it possible to drive into the park if you started REALLY early? Or is the shuttle the only option? Leaving our dog in the trailer for hours isn't our favorite choice.

Zion is the NP where you have to utilize the shuttle. It starts running at 6:30 am.

Edit: To clarify…you can drive into the park (east to west or west to east), but you can’t get to the lodge and the “better” hikes…like the narrows, upper, middle & lower pools, etc

Thanks. That’s what I thought. Our plan was to drive through the Zion tunnel.

Here's a few the DW took of the tunnel and in the tunnel.

We just got back from Utah. The longer tunnel at Zion is a mile long. It costs $15 dollars to tow large vehicles through it, after you meet the height requirement (13' 1").

The Pack Creek fire started just southeast of Moab, the day before we arrived. Be prepared for some limitations, due to fire fighter activity.
