Squatter!

Went to install battery in our FW before leaving tomorrow and found this! Nest with eggs and now we're afraid to move momma and her nest. Anyone experience this? Don't really know how to move the nest and not upset momma. Maybe we're not meant to camp this week. . .

as I recall one of the admins had this issue a few years back. They made a perch next the 5ver, and moved the next. Don't recall if mama was satisfied not.

My solution

I made a pin box cover to keep the birds from nesting in my pin box. Over the years I have taken momma bird and eggs on a few camping trips inadvertently. So far no recurrence. Also it protects my wires when parked.

Just some scrap lumber and a couple of clamps.

Contact a local wildlife conservatory or humane society. They can advise you the best approach.

We’ve had birds nesting before too. Now I keep a towel stuffed in the pin box so the birds can’t build a nest. Just be sure to remove the towel before traveling.

I stuffed mine full of large trash bags a month or so ago to keep this from happening. They were even trying to build nests in the dashboard of my golf cart. Thank goodness nesting season is over here.

I’ve had similar issues with birds. They like to build nests in the space under the slide toppers. My solution was to block the openings with small “nerf” foam footballs and mount pinwheels on the ends of the topper rollers. A neighbor at the storage lot had problems with the pin box and alerted me about it. Like norty, I made a cover to block the opening, mine is black corplast mounted with Velcro strips and is permanent.
Only a problem in the spring tho.

LOL. Cute. Be careful about contacting officials about what to do. They may comeback and demand an environmental impact study and after many months declare your bird an endangered species. Not to be disturbed unti after it has decided to leave on its own

Yes, it has happened to me. Had a nest of Starlings in mine. Like Norty, I fabricated a plug from screen wire. No more birds.

The only bird problem I've had is a little chickadee sitting on the backer ladder pecking like crazy on the rear window for days on end. He could see himself and thought it was another bird. Didn't do any damage, just a lot of "bird spit" on the window!

If it were me I would remove and not worry about the babies. I hate to sound cruel but just earlier this year this same thing happened to me. I decided to not mess with babies so I went back two weeks later to check and found they were gone. Good right, not quite. I noticed a rat snake had moved in, cleaned house and manage to slip in between crack between hitch and fiberglass and made its way into the area above hitch. Took me a week and half to get it the snake out.

Normally if you move the nest the mother will abandon the eggs.if you care enough you'll have to leave her be.she looks like an Asian dove.very gentle and gregarious birds.you could call your local wildlife rescue and they may enlighten you. Good luck

Well it is no joke. For most active bird nests there are local and federal laws that can result in thousands of dollars in fines for destroying active birds nests. The Federal Migratiry Bird Treaty of 1918 makes it illegal to destroy or disturb nests with birds or eggs in them.

Penalties for violations can be as high as $15,000, confiscation of tools used and 6 months in jail.

You can apply for a permit to remove but it is a time consuming process that will likely result in denial.

There are some exceptions to the act including house sparrows, some doves and 4 or 5 other birds.

The nests are also likely to contain mites, flees, ticks, and other parasites. Removal should involve gloves, eye protection and and adequate face mask.

So why would you do it then?when i said you must joking I meant the advice about not telling anyone.is that what you meant?if so............remember now there is a record. It's right here on the forum.counseling to commit an act contrary to state and federal law

What a good idea to make a cover for your pin box!! I wish I'd thought of that. I had my pin box full of nesting materials, no birds, they'd already gone but the hardest time getting all that stuff out of there. My biggest surprise was opening the propane bottle storage and find a nest right up on top between the bottles with mamma and little ones ! I was surprised that they could get in there. I just closed the door and let them alone until they flew off. Life is full of little surprises.

The person that you responded to did not suggest anything illegal. They suggested, correctly in most cases, that if you report the bird nest it may result in a bureaucratic mess. Nobody counseled anyone to commit a felony.

As to the bird in question, the collared dove, is generally known as the Eurasian not Asian Dove. It is an invasive species and there are no federal protections and no state protections I know of. . It is pretty much open season on them. If the original poster is so inclined they can disturb, destroy or do anything they want with this particular nest and eggs. Many states encourage the destruction of members of this sub group of doves. It is fair to compare it with the invasive Lionfish’ impact on reef fauna.
