It's All My Wife's Fault

My wife thinks I am too old to continue motorcycle touring and that we need to seek adventures in an RV instead. I tend to disagree with the too old part. At 78 I am still fully capable of logging 500 or so miles a day on my BMW, though I will admit to being past "Iron Butt" capable.

So she spent hour upon hour, week after week, watching YouTube vids of RV stuff and decided that the only thing that would fulfill her requirements was a Class C motorhome. (I would have preferred a trailer.) So she found - and bought - a '99 Jayco Eagle 28' on a Ford E450 chassis.

So here we are, new to the club and as ignorant as babes. I am sure I will have a ton of questions, simplistic ones no doubt, as we try to figure this whole new adventure out.

Now I am going out to see if I can make the awning deploy and retract. Wish me luck.

Welcome. I too made a similar transition. 1200RT to a truck and trailer.

Welcome.

Don't tell your DW this, but in my experience, when she says "you" are too old, she is avoiding admitting "she" is too old. Age is a bigger deal for DW than me.

Have fun with the RV - it is a great hobby and requires a lot more ingenuity than keeping a motorcycle running. Your brain will NOT get old if you RV.

No need to give up the bike, you can put your bike in a cargo trailer and tow it behind that motorhome.

Hey, Actually...… Your wife did you a huge favor by getting a Class C instead of a trailer...…. Now you can put the bike on the back if the class C on it's own trailer and take it with you! Nuff Said!

Thanks for all the welcome posts. My current (pun intended) adventure is trouble shooting several non-working interior lights. Giving serious consideration to replacing all the fixtures with LED fixtures.

Also investigating suspension upgrade options. This thing handles like a wallowing pig.

Welcome to the forum. This is definitely where the answers are.

I would be concerned about the apparent significant delamination of the fiberglass siding at the rear and on the leading edge of the overhang. Typically, delimitation is the result of leaks at joints, windows, or hardware. Water where it doesn't belong means rot and black mold.

I may be out of line bringing this up on your first post, but if there's any possibility of recourse (if there is a problem), it would be sooner, not later.

I was going to say the same thing.

Welcome!

First order of business, find/fix those leaks.

My dad's Class C had leaks in virtually all the same places. Same with my in-laws.

Great thing is that there are LOTS of knowledgeable people on this forum to help you! Even with the simple stuff!

Your only as old as you feel; when you can’t feel anymore your likely dead - so go for it
(Dead men can’t ride motorcycles).

That concerns me too. Unfortunately it wasn't obvious when we looked at it. I only noticed it when I took the picture and the light was hitting it just right. On my ever growing list of chores, when the weather warms a little, is a careful inspection and sealing of all the joints on the roof and around the windows.

Your comment is not out of line at all. I need all the help I can get.

Motocycles and Motorhomes

I know you already have your rig, but when my wife and I were at a campground a few months ago, we met a couple with a 40 foot motorhome (can't remember the model), and the back part of the motorhome had a garage. The guy opened the garage and showed me his motorcycle parked there with a pull-out ramp stowed underneath.

Welcome! There's nothing like a bike, but I gave mine up when I found I didn't bounce as well as in the past. Thank your DW. A final suggestion, we never say outloud that SWMBO is wrong.

I too noticed what SIAMESE noted regarding the delaminatation. I too was a little reluctant to speak up but it is better that you know now instead of later. This is an inherent problem with some older fibreglass sided RV's and TT's. It can be caused by leaks or from excessive moisture created inside, especially shower stalls. I have a friend with a 2011 TT who has spent a lot of $ trying to repair damage to a sidewall next to what was caused by a leaking window frame seal. I'd suggest that you get a responsible dealer to asses the issue. Good luck and enjoy your RV. I too sold my Wing last year. Not from old age but just riding less each year.
