The reason Mayberry was so quiet and peaceful was because nobody was married.

Andy, Aunt Bea, Barney, Floyd, Howard, Goober, Gomer, Sam, Earnest T. Bass, Helen, Thelma Lou, Clara, and of course Opie were single.

The only married person was Otis, and he stayed perpetually drunk.

I think that they started filming in color around 1966. If I remember correctly, the first 5 years were black and white. To me, the show went down hill after Don Knotts left.

I don't know about that... Barney was a player. He had lipstick smooch marks on his face several times from Thelma Lou and one of those wacky blonde women that were always trying to pick up Andy and Barney.

And he was always hitting on Juanita, even when he was going steady with Thelma Lou.

And Barney took a few out of town vacations, supposedly to the "YMCA" in Mt. Pilot, which when Andy explained what he did there to Opie, it sure sounded like Andy was covering up the truth for Opie's sake. LOL

But you're right. Otis was the only one married, and it drove him to drink.

There was that other married couple in one show who fought each other all the time, but were really nice to everyone else. Andy sentenced them to some marital "training", and when they become lovey dovey with each other, they treated the rest of the town like crap! So Andy got them back to fighting each other, and the whole town was much happier.

Darlene Darling eventually married, and even though she was a member of the Darling clan, her marriage seemed almost normal.
