Alante Suspension

I don't have an unlimited budget and am wondering where the best place to put my money on suspension enhancement; Rear only Sumo Springs or rear trac bar? Both are around $500-$600 and I can do only one on my Alante 31V.

If you already have a rear sway bar I would go with the trac bar as it is an actual mechanical device designed to stop a symptom rather than just treat a symptom.

We have an Alante 31R. Sumos in the front, Timbrens (5400# variant) in the back, and I run the tires at F-89psi and R-86psi. Couldn't be happier. Those changes along with a Roadmaster steering stabilizer have made the Alante an entirely different vehicle to drive.

I have the Entegra Vision 31V, same coach as the Allante 31V. First the Sumo springs will help with body roll, much like the sway bar does now. The tracbar will prevent the axle from moving side to side from the wind and passing trucks.

I would opt for the tracbar and do the CFH both front and rear to stiffen up the body roll.

Here's what I did in order. Not saying this is the best order, but this is what I did. Really you could do everything I did except the alignment and steering stabilizer for the same cost. I do think the steering stabilizer is worth the money, but maybe you can do that at a later date.

Free

- Weigh the coach and adjust the tire pressure. The goodyear tire chart minimum pressure (80psi) is plenty enough to handle the weight of my front axle, however its not enough to keep the wandering down. I currently run 90 as i'm still testing different pressures.

- Cheap Handling Fix front and rear. Made a HUGE difference, but still allowed for quite a bit of "push" from passing semis and wind.

- Reload the coach to move as much weight to the front as possible.

$$$ - All of these were done simultaneously by a truck shop

- Trac-Bar: The track bar works so well, I can feel the coach lean away from the passing trucks vs the rear end move to the right. Highly recommend one of these.

- Safe-T-Plus Steering Stabilizer: The steering stabilizer helps bring the steering wheel back to center and seems to help with the wandering some.

- Alignment: Oddly enough the alignment was actually very good. I recommend having the toe set to 1/16" in on each side for a total toe of 1/8" in. Set as much positive caster as possible and still be in spec with Ford recommendations. Mine were already right at or very close to the upper limit.

At this point, i'm still playing with tire pressures to find my sweet spot, but right now the coach drives like a dream compared to what it did beforehand.

Thanks for the input. I did the CHF last year and added the Roadmaster steering stabilizer and yes, they helped the handling a bunch. Sounds like the next step is the rear trac bar (it comes with one in the front) and it is something I can install myself.

Sounds good... I don't think you'll be disappointed with the tracbar.
